Natalie Portman To Headline HBO Films’ ‘The Days Of Abandonment’ Based On Elena Ferrante’s Novel

Oscar winner Natalie Portman is set to star and executive produce HBO Films ’ The Days of Abandonment , based on Elena Ferrante’s best-selling novel. The film, which is currently in pre-production, hails from writer-director Maggie Betts ( Novitiate ), Portman and her MountainA Films, Maven Screen Media, Len Amato’s Crash & Salvage and Fandango.  Ferrante also serves as an executive producer. Written and directed by Betts, The Days of Abandonment revolves around Tess, played by Portman. When Tess, a woman who abandoned her own dreams for a stable home life, is in turn abandoned by her husband, her world is thrown off its axis. M.I.A. Launches GoFundMe Page to Aid Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

M.I.A. has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to aid those affected by the recent volcanic eruption of La Soufrière in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. “I’ve never set up a crowdfunding page before, but as you may know Saint Vincent and the Grenadines has been very close to my heart,” she wrote on her Instagram. “I wrote my first song there. Since going to Sri Lanka is out of the question for political reasons, it’s been my island away from my island for the last 20 years.” “La Soufrière has caused massive devastation on a scale that has not been witnessed by the residents in the last 40 years,” she continued. “The situation today is that there’s been power cuts and water scarcity. Everything is covered by ash. Common Added to Afropunk’s 2020 Virtual Festival Planet Afropunk

Rapper Common , Sudanese-American artist Dua Saleh, and the Southern California band Asiatica are among the artists who’ve been added to AfroPunk’s 2020 virtual festival, Planet Afropunk, taking place October 23rd through 25th. The new additions to the lineup also include the North Carolina experimental outfit Black Haüs, Kenyan rapper MC Yallah, and the Soweto punk group TCYIF. These artists join an already-packed lineup of musicians who will stream performances from across the globe, including Bootsy Collins, Ari Lenox, Yves Tumor, Tobe Nwigwe, Sampa the Great, Serpentwithfeet, Meshell Ndegeocello, Moses Sumney, and Duckwrth. Along with all the music, Planet Afropunk boasts a full lineup of speakers, including actress Amanda Seales, Daily Show correspondent Dulcé Sloan, journalist Ivie Ani, singer-songwriter/model Dawn Richard, and activist Tamika Mallory. Biden to Pledge September 11th Withdrawal of U.S. Troops From Afghanistan

President Joe Biden intends to withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan by September 11th, 2021, an extension of a May 1st, 2021 deadline negotiated by former president Trump with the Taliban. The president plans to announce his decision on Wednesday, according to the Washington Post , which broke the story, and other outlets. Although the Taliban has threatened to renew attacks if the U.S. and NATO do not adhere to the deadline, it is not yet apparent if pushing the date back by months will lead to retaliation. The nearly 20-year war in Afghanistan has had dire consequences. The Costs of War Project at Brown University’s Watson Institute estimates as of January 2020 that 157,000 people in Afghanistan have been killed in the war since 2001, and more than 43,000 of those killed were civilians.
