After a marathon five hours of testimony yesterday, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg returned to Congress today to address another round of questions about privacy and the Cambridge Analytica scandal. House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Greg Walden, R-Oregon, opened the hearing calling Facebook an American success story — a company that embodies the nation’s principles of freedom of speech and association. The British musician Tirzah constructs hushed songs that echo regardless. Across a handful of releases — an excellent string of EPs followed by her 2018 debut Devotion — the singer born Tirzah Mastin, alongside her longtime collaborators Mica Levi and Coby Sey, unfurl emotions with the patience and care of a gardener. What blossoms is often unexpected. Tirzah’s music comes as close as any to grasping that intangible buzzword, “vibes.” Lyrically, she’s careful never to say too much. Sparse and disjointed phrases become declarations that you’d swear were common knowledge (“Feels like it’s raining, super soaks” she sings on Devotion’s “Gladly”). The music gestures intently towards a feeling, and leaves the listener to figure out what exactly that feeling is. Levi’s production, often atmospheric, lush, and dense all at once, manages to bring Tirzah’s songwriting into your subconscious. The International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences has revealed the nominees for the 25th annual Webby Awards ahead of its virtual ceremony on Tuesday May 18, 2021 hosted by The Good Place and Legendary’s Jameela Jamil. The Webbys celebrate the year’s best Internet work as well as outstanding individuals and organizations who are using the Internet to respond to the impact of the coronavirus, social injustice and more. The situation in Myanmar remains dire, the International Coalition of Film makers at Risk (ICFR) has warned, with prominent cultural figures continuing to be imprisoned, and in some instances even killed. To date, more than 100 professionals from the local filmmaking community have been targeted for arrest, it said. As Deadline reported in February, the country’s military forces, known as the Tatmadaw, seized power in the country after disputing an election result back in November that saw a landslide win for Aung San Suu Kyi’s political party, the NLD. Widespread demonstrations in response to the action saw thousands of protestors thrown in jail and reportedly more than 700 deaths, while three prominent members of the NLD also died in police custody, according to Reuters .
