“In the context of this cultural moment, we as black people have to apply a critical lens to consider for what we’re advocating. At the capitol building of a state that upheld — or is still upholding — these ideas of white supremacy and the ‘lost cause of the Confederacy,’ how do we best counteract precisely that?” Williams says. “Putting up a statue of someone who is a generally nice person because Nathan Bedford Forrest was such a bad person is good. But honoring someone who embodied exactly everything that Forrest didn’t is best.” … [Read more...] about Why Dolly Parton Doesn’t Deserve a Nashville Statue — Yet

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Channels The Indomitable Spirit Of Black Panther Party Co-Founder Bobby Seale In ‘The Trial Of The Chicago 7’: “I Wore That Like A Badge Of Honor”
ABDUL-MATEEN: I definitely am. I’m in the process right now, working with my manager to start my production company, and one of the things that I’m going to do with that is find new voices, find voices from places like the places where I come from—West Oakland, New Orleans, Louisiana. [I’m going to] really mine those places for the stories that should be told, for those universes, and the adventures that go on in those places. I think that once I get in the position that I find myself in, it’s my responsibility to make sure that other people have the same opportunity to walk in the same shoes. They have amazing stories and experiences to tell, so a lot of it is finding and cultivating talent, and things like that, so that we can not only develop and serve those communities, but get new, fresh voices and stories. I definitely want to be a part of the body that ushers in that new energy. … [Read more...] about Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Channels The Indomitable Spirit Of Black Panther Party Co-Founder Bobby Seale In ‘The Trial Of The Chicago 7’: “I Wore That Like A Badge Of Honor”

Captain America’s MCU Return Could Have Him Returning the Infinity Stones
This is not to say, had time allotted for it, that we needed to see the return of the Infinity Stones in the movie. But much was made of this within Endgame. It was an important element of the plot. One has to imagine there would be challenges along the way, ones that would be entertaining to watch. What would happen when Cap tried to return the Soul Stone? Would that have any bearing on Black Widow's fate? What is it going to look like when he shows up on Asgard to bring back the Soul Stone? Is Cap going to need to go undercover as a Hydra agent again to return the Mind Stone? There is a lot of meat on those bones. Plus, Steve would get to reunite with Peggy during this quest. … [Read more...] about Captain America’s MCU Return Could Have Him Returning the Infinity Stones
The Oath Keeper Who Wants to Arm Black Lives Matter
From the start Andrews’ work in Ferguson was not your typical Oath Keeper fare. Although the group professes an almost fetishistic respect for the Constitution, its best-known engagements over the years have tended more toward armed confrontations with the government than political or legal efforts to safeguard citizens’ rights. Its most famous operation was a near-bloody standoff, in April 2014, in which a company of Oath Keeper gunmen mustered near Bunkerville, Nevada and chased off federal agents sent to enforce a cattle-grazing judgment against the rancher Cliven Bundy. (This week, Bundy’s son Ammon, took over an Oregon wildlife refuge at gunpoint, accusing government officials of violating ranchers’ constitutional rights.) By virtue of its membership — which is to say, mostly white men of a constitutionalist or libertarian bent — the organization has rarely mounted missions on behalf of black people. … [Read more...] about The Oath Keeper Who Wants to Arm Black Lives Matter
