The funding will be sourced from the $20 billion previously approved by Congress in September 2017, after Hurricane Maria first struck Puerto Rico. Yet in the two years since the budget was passed, the Department of Housing and Urban Development has only disbursed $1.5 billion of those funds. An additional $1.8 billion was allotted in government contracts to restore electricity on the island — but instead, resulted in the indictment of two FEMA officials on charges of fraud and bribery. … [Read more...] about Puerto Rico Needs Our Help
Directed by Claudia Calderon, the video sees bandmates Raquel Berrios and Luis Alfredo Del Valle fall asleep in New York City and awaken on a Puerto Rican shore. After being startled by a young girl beating a snare drum, the two follow a group of revelers, dressed in frilly, candy pink Carnival garb. Together they march and play music through the streets of Arecibo and Hatillo, as has been the local tradition since 1823. The crew upturns a festival float to reveal a single word spelled out on its roof: “REGRESA,” or “COME BACK.” … [Read more...] about In ‘Vámono,’ Buscabulla Dream of a Bright Future in Puerto Rico
Making matters worse ... video recently surfaced showing TONS of unused earthquake aid -- from bottled water, diapers and formula to portable stoves and propane gas -- collecting dust in a government-owned 43,000 square foot warehouse. Christmas movies as of late are certainly cribbing from the two lesser-known Thanksgiving films that I mentioned above. I forgave and forgot about Katie Holmes trying to cook a turkey. I smiled once at Holly Hunter battling her deranged family. But these films never really bothered me on any level. Thanksgiving doesn't have the lore or mythology of Christmas. It's not a substantial enough means of generating a provincial backstory. People go home. They eat. They sleep. End of story. There hasn't ever been anything that could top Planes, Trains & Automobiles because it's a perfect film. From top to bottom. The most anyone can do is try and remake it, but that would be a miserable failure. Thanksgiving at the Cineplex is a time for brainless fodder. We're stuffed to the gourd. And we're very sleepy. We don't want to watch other people scream over pie, shoving second helpings of sweet potato gravy in their mouth. That's why Hollywood releases films like Twilight and Transporter 3 over … [Read more...] about BOOS! and WHOOP-DOOS!: Star Trek Vs. Thanksgiving!
