British Regulator Ofcom Warns BBC Will Become “Out Of Step” With Audience And Tech Developments Without Reform
Updated with BBC response: The BBC must reform its operating license to focus on online services or “become out of step with audience behavior and technology developments,” according to British media regulator Ofcom . Failure to act “could stand in the way of the BBC’s transformation,” it added in a series of proposals set out today centered around modernizing the broadcaster’s operating license. Ofcom’s report acknowledges the BBC remains “at the heart of the UK’s broadcasting sector” and has been transforming and modernizing its approach in the face of disruption brought about by global streaming services. Broadly, this could be achieved by better incorporating online services such as streamer BBC iPlayer, audio service BBC Sounds and the BBC website; allowing the BBC more flexibility to respond to new audience needs (while ring-fencing quotas around areas such as news and current affairs programming); and “greater transparency” from the BBC. Good Omens For TV And Film Industries, Which Contribute Nearly $700m To Scottish Economy: Screen Scotland Report
Neil Gaiman’s Good Omens , Eurovision: The Story of Fire Saga and James Bond’s No Time to Die are just a handful of the productions that have been filmed in Scotland, and a new report confirms that TV and film is blossoming north of the border. Screen Scotland ’s report reveals that the industries contributed more than £568m ($697m) to the country’s economy in 2019, a figure it hopes to double by the end of the decade. Amazon Prime has made two series of Good Omens and the forthcoming Anansi Boys , also based on a book by Neil Gaiman. Douglas Mackinnon, showrunner on both titles, told the BBC: “There were lots of discussions, and of course it all came down to money and practicalities but the bottom line was we could make it in Scotland, and at the top level.” Screen Scotland ’s report, focusing on 2019 before the pandemic closed down multiple productions, cited various titles for the boom in the local industry: Outlander series 5, the 25th James … [Read more...] about Good Omens For TV And Film Industries, Which Contribute Nearly $700m To Scottish Economy: Screen Scotland Report
SCOTUS Buffer Zone Covers Group Fighting Buffer Zones at Abortion Clinics
Soon after the draft of its decision stripping abortion rights got leaked, the Supreme Court resembled a fortress. The courthouse was ringed with eight-foot fencing and public streets and walkways near the grounds were closed to the public. There was thick irony in the fact that the high court justices had created a “buffer zone” to limit pro-abortion demonstrators from getting up-close-and-personal. The court has spent decades declaring broad buffer zones around abortion clinics unconstitutional, forcing patients to run an intimidating (and often abusive) gauntlet of anti-abortion protesters. This irony runs deeper still. The anti-abortion group Liberty Counsel jumpstarted the war on clinic buffer zones with a 1994 Supreme Court case, and continues to battle such restrictions as an intolerable infringement on First Amendment rights. The group has an outpost in Washington, D.C., but Americans cannot protest there either — because the Supreme Court buffer zone actually … [Read more...] about SCOTUS Buffer Zone Covers Group Fighting Buffer Zones at Abortion Clinics
