Van Conner , the Screaming Trees co-founding bassist who played on the rock band’s hits including “All I Know” and “Nearly Lost You,” died Tuesday of pneumonia. He was 55. His brother and bandmate, Gary Lee Conner, posted the news on social media. “He was one of the closest friends I ever had and I loved him immensely,” the guitarist wrote on Facebook . “I will miss him forever and ever and ever… .” Screaming Trees formed in Washington State in the mid-1980s and recorded a half-dozen indie albums before signing with Epic Records in 1990 as the grunge scene was coalescing around such groups as Mudhoney, the Melvins, Soundgarden and Nirvana. The band’s major-label debut disc failed to catch fire, but the follow-up — 1992’s Sweet Oblivion — was its breakthrough. A crowd of approximately 100 gathered outside Los Angeles Police Department headquarters Friday night in protest of the Memphis police beating of Tyre Nichols . The protest saw LAPD officers in riot gear face off against the crowd, with one protester lobbing a firecracker at a patrol car. Later, a crowd banged on a police car with an officer inside. The protests followed the release by Memphis police of video footage of Nichols’ beating death at the hands of police there. Metal barricades surrounded the LAPD headquarter, but were eventually torn down by the group. Elsewhere, protests were seen in New York, Atlanta, Memphis, Portland, Oregon, Philadelphia, Boston and Seattle. Dozens of protestors from Britain’s Indian diaspora gathered outside the BBC HQ in London on Sunday, angered by the portrayal of the Indian leader and his relationship with the nation’s Muslim minority. Meanwhile, Indian free speech activists are trying to have the film reinstated on social media after it was removed. India’s Supreme Court will next week consider petitions against a government order to have clips of the show removed from Twitter and YouTube, Reuters reports. Two lawyers have taken out petitions against the move and they will be heard in the next few days. UPDATE , with press conference : The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has released photos and a description of the man suspected in the shooting deaths of five men and five women last night in Monterey Park in an area that had hosted a Lunar New Year’s eve celebration. At least ten additional victims were transported to local hospitals, and are listed in various conditions from stable to critical. The shooting occurred at 10:20 p.m. Saturday on West Garvey Avenue following a major festival for Asian communities. A subsequent incident occurred about 20 minutes later when an armed man entered a dance hall in the nearby city of Alhambra. That man was disarmed by others inside the hall and fled before police arrived. Police now suspect the two incidents are related. The surveillance photos were taken at the dance hall incident. Dissident Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi has gone on hunger strike to protest his ongoing detention at Iran ’s notoriously harsh Evin prison, even though his sentence has been declared void by the country’s Supreme Court. The move comes just days after hopes that the director was on the verge of being released on bail were dashed, even though his lawyer Saleh Nikbakht had successfully challenged his detention. Current RuPaul’s Drag Race stars Salina EsTitties and Sasha Colby announced nominees in select GLAAD Media Awards categories in a ‘ GLAAD Drag Story Time’ video that just debuted on GLAAD’s YouTube. In the video, Sasha Colby commented on recent attacks on drag performers across the country: “Performers like us are being threatened with anti-LGBTQ bills, nasty protests, and even violence. You know what’s scary?
