Amy Grant Postponing Tour Dates, As Initial Injury Reports Downplayed Severe Injury
Amy Grant suffered a concussion and was unconscious for ten minutes after falling during a July bike ride, according to reports. The singer announced Friday that her remaining tour dates for the summer and early fall would be postponed as a consequence. Initial reports indicated Grant suffered “cuts and abrasions” in her fall. News of the concussion puts a new spin on what occurred, and explains why an ambulance and the subsequent postponement of husband Vince Gill’s tour dates happened. “Friends, we regretfully need to postpone Amy’s previously scheduled tour dates in September and October due to Amy needing more time to recover from injuries and a concussionsustained in a bicycling accident that occurred in Nashville on July 27, 2022,” her team wrote in a statement. Grant previously postponed August shows immediately after the accident. All postponed dates will be rescheduled for February through April 2023, the statement said. “Amy is getting stronger every … [Read more...] about Amy Grant Postponing Tour Dates, As Initial Injury Reports Downplayed Severe Injury
‘Where Are the Jews?’: Scandal Erupts at the Academy Museum
On Sept. 25, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures held its opening gala with a starry guest list that included Lady Gaga, Brad Pitt, Nicole Kidman, Queen Latifah, Patty Jenkins, Tiffany Haddish, Kristen Stewart, and Jurnee Smollet. It was a moment long in the making, given that planning of the Renzo Piano-designed mecca celebrating the history of film first began back in 2005 and was delayed by the rise of the Covid pandemic. Though eyebrows were raised by the fact that the A-list revelers mingled maskless inside the 33,000-square-foot space on Wilshire Boulevard at a time when celebrities were publicly chastising those who ignored Covid precautions, a much bigger controversy was brewing. Donors and influential Academy members, many of whom already had received private tours, were outraged that Hollywood ’s origin story — wherein a group of mostly Jewish émigrés fled persecution in their home countries to create what would become a multibillion-dollar, American-led industry — … [Read more...] about ‘Where Are the Jews?’: Scandal Erupts at the Academy Museum
Aretha Franklin Cancels Upcoming Concerts on Doctor’s Orders
Aretha Franklin canceled a pair of upcoming concerts, including a headlining gig at New Orleans’ Jazz Fest , after her doctor recommended that the Queen of Soul take a break from touring. “ Aretha Franklin has been ordered by her doctor to stay off the road and rest completely for at least the next two months,” Franklin’s management sent in a statement. “She is extremely disappointed she cannot perform at this year’s New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival as she had expected and hoped to.” Franklin was scheduled to perform April 28th at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Fest; organizers announced Friday that Rod Stewart will now fill in for Franklin in that Saturday night slot. Additionally, Franklin announced that her March 25th concert at Newark’s New Jersey Performing Arts Center would also be cancelled. Live Nation Admits Helping Bands Like Metallica Scalp Tickets
TMZ/Getty Composite Live Nation 's provoking the ire of concert lovers everywhere, because it's fessed up to the shady practice of putting tickets directly on resale sites ... before the public even has a chance to buy them at face value. The touring company's admission comes on the heels of a Billboard report detailing a secretly recorded phone call between a Live Nation honcho and an event promoter for Metallica in February 2017 ... days before the band announced its WorldWired North American stadium tour. During the call ... the 2 parties agreed to put 88,000 tickets directly on secondary market sites like StubHub, so people never got a chance to buy them on sites like Ticketmaster, which is actually owned by Live Nation. The company's admitted to facilitating this scalping practice for "about a dozen artists out of the thousands we work with" ... but other than Metallica, the bands remain unknown. Live Nation says it did it because bands know face value … [Read more...] about Live Nation Admits Helping Bands Like Metallica Scalp Tickets
Metallica Unplugged by Stagehand at Grammys
CBS The Metallica duet with Lady Gaga at the Grammys was doomed by a stagehand who got reckless with James Hetfield 's mic ... seconds before they went live. Sources connected to the production tell us everything was fine right before the "Moth Into Flame" collab was about to begin. Gaga and the band's line check, right before the performance, went off without a hitch. However, between the mic check and their act ... a wire under the stage got unplugged. We're told a stagehand did it by accident, but the damage was done -- Hetfield's mic was dead through most of the performance. They eventually fixed the unplugged wire with seconds left in the song. We reached out the Grammys, but no word back yet. James handled it all like a pro, 'cause that's rock 'n' roll. Insult to injury? Laverne Cox forgot to mention Metallica in her intro. I am so sorry to #Metallica and all their fans. I am told I didn't say their names during the intro. Love you … [Read more...] about Metallica Unplugged by Stagehand at Grammys
How Do You Make a Western in the 21st Century?
There’s a lot of ways to describe Jordan Peele ’s Nope : an update on “Watch the Skies!” sci-fi from the 1950s; a tribute to Steven Spielberg’s 1970s blockbuster building blocks (what if those Close Encounter of the Third Kind UFOs were just hungry, extraterrestrial great white sharks?); a 21st century meta-text about what we watch and why we keep watching it. All 100-percent accurate. But read the reviews and explainers and numerous think pieces on Peele’s latest blend of horror and commentary, and there’s one word that keeps popping up, again and again. It’s mentioned when they talk about Jupiter’s Claim, the modest frontier-themed amusement park run by Steven Yuen’s former child actor, who once played a pint-sized sheriff in a movie and still takes his fancy sartorial cues from that role. It’s namechecked in the film posters you see at Haywood Ranch, notably Buck and the Preacher and Duel at Diablo . You can see traces of it in the movie’s scenes of folks handling horses … [Read more...] about How Do You Make a Western in the 21st Century?
21 Grams
Just when you thought Sean Penn had the Best Actor Oscar locked up for his career high in Mystic River , along comes tough competition: himself. In this scorcher of a drama from Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu — it’s only his second film, after the brilliant Amores Perros , and his first in English — Penn burns with ferocity and feeling as Paul, a math professor faced with the possibility of death after a heart transplant. His wife (Charlotte Gainsbourg) wants to have a baby, something of him left behind. Paul sees spirituality in terms of numbers, the twenty-one grams (the weight of a hummingbird, a chocolate bar or a stack of five nickels) that leave our bodies at death. Is it the weight of the soul? Clearly, Inarritu and screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga aren’t afraid of tackling big issues or splintering a plot — as they did in Amores Perros — to make audiences work at putting the pieces together. They intensify the puzzle by adding two equally damaged … [Read more...] about 21 Grams
