Inspiration can come from the most unanticipated places, like walking the dog in the park or buying a soft pretzel at the mall. For Morgan Cooper , it came in 2019 while driving down Route 71 in Kansas City, Missouri. Heading home after shooting a low-budget beauty commercial, Cooper concocted a plan to turn ’90s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air into a gritty short film, with Will Smith ’s iconic character reimagined as an unlucky Philly teen who gets caught with a gun during a playground brawl. Rather than face a certain future behind bars, his Uncle Phil works some attorney magic and arranges for Will to start over in the wealthy Southern California neighborhood where he would attend an elite private school. Filmed in eight days with hometown actors and locations in Kansas City and Burbank, the three-and-a-half-minute potboiler was never meant to serve as a grassroots resume for a gig in Hollywood; Morgan just wanted to have some fun. “I built my career on … [Read more...] about ‘Bel-Air’ Director Morgan Cooper’s Life Was Turned Around By A Three-And-A-Half Minute YouTube Video — Deadline Disruptors

Cannes Review: Letitia Wright In ‘The Silent Twins’
Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Smoczynska ( The Lure, Fugue) makes her English-language debut with The Silent Twins , the strange and remarkable story of June and Jennifer Gibbons, twin sisters who only communicated with each other from 8 to later-teen years when drugs and drinking led to petty theft and an arson charge that landed them in the tightly secured medical ward of Broadmoor for 11 years before being released in the 1980s. Creating their own puppetry and dolls, poems and music, which they only broadcast for each other on a fake radio program, the “twinnies” as they were called by family fell into an odd void that became more pronounced, even when they were forced to go to separate schools at one point. And they carried on this way until becoming young women landing and in legal trouble until incredibly being incarcerated for over a decade, five or six times as long as the longest sentence for the petty crimes of which they were accused. In knockout performances, … [Read more...] about Cannes Review: Letitia Wright In ‘The Silent Twins’
Cannes Review: Saeed Roustaee’s ‘Leila’s Brothers’
They all hate one another, Leila (the magnificent Taraneh Alidoosti) tells her brother Alireza (Navid Mohammad Zadeh) when he returns to the family home. It is a rare visit; he works in an industrial plant somewhere on the other side of Iran. He isn’t going to tell his family that he has been laid off with the promise of pay that has never materialized; in the Tehran family that crowds Saeed Roustaee ’s long and absorbing clan drama Leila’s Brothers , he is supposed to be the properly functioning son. What can you say about the other three brothers in this Cannes competition film? There is Manouchehr (Payman Maadi) who, as they all like to say, thinks with his pectorals. Parvis (Farhad Aslani) is very fat and a heavy drinker; they all expect him to die any day, though he does seem to keep fathering children successfully. Farhad (Mohammad Ali Mohammadi) is a shyster who could barely lie straight in bed, which might have something to do with why his wife is divorcing him, taking … [Read more...] about Cannes Review: Saeed Roustaee’s ‘Leila’s Brothers’

Kevin Spacey, James Franco, and More Are Trying to Make Comebacks at Cannes
From a cramped hotel suite in a luxury Cannes hotel, a pair of film executives are trying to pull off an unlikely feat: Sell distribution rights to Kevin Spacey ’s comeback film. On May 17, Vantage Media International, or VMI, a Hollywood-based company that sells movies primarily to foreign markets, screened a finished print of the noir drama Peter Five Eight to would-be buyers willing to take a gamble on the two-time Oscar winner’s first leading role since his career came to a grinding halt in 2017 amid accusations of sexual misconduct. “The feedback is very good. People say it’s a quality film,” says VMI president of sales J.D. Beuafils. “But it’s really, really early on [in the deal-making].” In a room filled with marketing materials for VMI films like Randy Rhoads: Reflections of a Guitar Icon and the Sam Worthington-Machine Gun Kelly Western The Last Son , the company’s COO Jessica Bennett offers an equally vague assessment when asked if the … [Read more...] about Kevin Spacey, James Franco, and More Are Trying to Make Comebacks at Cannes

Morrissey Rocks Broadway (And Brightens It, Believe It Or Not): Review
Morrissey has never really been as gloomy as his reputation would suggest – no one is as gloomy as his reputation would suggest – but the former Smiths frontman seemed in especially good spirits – and powerfully strong voice – for last night’s first show of a seven-night Broadway residency. Transforming the lush, elegant 109-year-old Lunt-Fontanne Theatre (where the Donna Summer musical had tried so hard to resurrect disco) into a premiere, fine-sounding rock hall, Morrissey ripped into a 20-song set that surveyed his entire career. With a five-man band, this show is a loud, legitimate rocker – even the ballads cook – as Morrissey dives back to Smiths stuff (“Rubber Ring”, “What She Said”) through classic solo work (“Everyday Is Like Sunday”, “Suedehead”, “Hairdresser On Fire”) and right up to his forthcoming California Son album of covers (Jobriath’s “Morning Starship”). Without making any obvious modifications for the Broadway stage – no storytelling, … [Read more...] about Morrissey Rocks Broadway (And Brightens It, Believe It Or Not): Review
‘This Is Us’ Creator On The Premiere Episode’s Double Twist & What’s Next
SPOILER ALERT: This story contains details about the series premiere of the NBC dramedy series This Is Us . Dan Fogelman ’s This Is Us has been tugging at heartstrings ever since the first trailer was released in May, amassing a staggering more than 100 million views ahead of the show’s September debut. The dramedy’s official description: an ensemble — some of them sharing the same birthday — whose life stories intertwine in curious ways, was designed to protect the twist at the end of the premiere. Much like the reveal at the end of the pilot for Modern Family that the characters in the individual storylines are all related, This Is Us connected married couple Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and Jack ( Milo Ventimiglia ), who were expecting triplets, TV actor Kevin (Justin Hartley), his twin sister Kate (Chrissy Metz), and successful businessman Randall (newly minted Emmy winner Sterling K. Brown), who was looking for his birth father. It turned out that Randall is an … [Read more...] about ‘This Is Us’ Creator On The Premiere Episode’s Double Twist & What’s Next
