Rina Sawayama has delivered a reference-laden toast to a good life amidst so much chaos on her new song, “This Hell.” The track marks the lead single from Sawayama’s next album, Hold the Girl , out Sept. 2 via Dirty Hit. “This Hell” finds Sawayama injecting her future pop bona fides with some classic Nineties country (there’s even a “Let’s go, girls” at the very start of the tune, a direct nod to Shania Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!”). The rest of the song is a hook-laden rodeo ride through the current cultural landscape, featuring some righteous jabs at the paparazzi for their treatment of Britney Spears, Princess Diana, and Whitney Houston. But all of it is centered around a firm rallying cry: “This hell is better with you/We’re burning up together/Baby that makes two.” Sawayama crafted “This Hell” with producers Paul Epworth and Clarence Clarity, with additional writing help from Vixen. In a statement, Sawayama said she set out to write a “euphoric and … [Read more...] about Rina Sawayama Pulls Up to the Future Pop Rodeo on New Song ‘This Hell’

London West End’s Queen of Drama Sonia Friedman Is Conquering All The World’s Stages — Deadline Disruptors
When she was 23, Sonia Friedman was—to use her expression—thrown into a rehearsal room with Harold Pinter at London’s National Theatre. She was his deputy stage manager during production for the premiere of his one-act play Mountain Language starring theatrical royalty Michael Gambon and Eileen Atkins. “I was the person sitting right next to [Pinter],” she recalls. “He would whisper into my ear all the way through,” about how he wanted it to look, where’d there’d be a cue. She says the playwright would make almost no changes to his script. “Though he did at one point add a pause and asked me to write that into the script,” she says, smiling at the memory. It was a life-changing moment for her, working with playwrights who directed their own work. “I fell in love at that point, particularly with new work, watching actors mine something that no one else in the world has ever seen before.” She wanted more of that experience. Until then, she hadn’t really known what … [Read more...] about London West End’s Queen of Drama Sonia Friedman Is Conquering All The World’s Stages — Deadline Disruptors
Nile Rodgers Enlists Pharrell, Keith Urban for Diverse FOLD Festival
Of all the impassioned encomiums delivered to Nile Rodgers during Chic ‘s set at the bandleader’s inaugural FOLD Festival Tuesday night in Riverhead, NY, Pharrell Williams ‘ words were the most precise. “This man has been on fire since before I was born. The creativity burned that cancer out of his body,” Pharrell told the crowd, referring to Rodgers’ 2010 prostate cancer survival . “Thank you for your tremendous genius contribution that’s moved and rocked so many generations. Anything you ever need from me in the future, you don’t have to ask. You just have to tell me.” Williams, who first collaborated with Rodgers on Daft Punk’s 2013 mega-hit “Get Lucky,” appeared to perform a mini medley of “Blurred Lines,” “Get Lucky” and “Happy.” But his spoken words rang truer. Since his first hit — 1977’s “Dance, Dance, Dance” with Chic — Rodgers has personified funk and disco music, falling in and out of favor throughout the years alongside his genres. In the past few years, … [Read more...] about Nile Rodgers Enlists Pharrell, Keith Urban for Diverse FOLD Festival

100 Years, 100 Maverick Movies
T he way I see it, and I’ve got the conch, the best movies of the last 100 years were made by mavericks who busted rules to follow their obsessions. We’re talking about a century of cinema, but it’s still rock & roll to me. I had certain criteria: Each movie had to embody that rock spirit of artful defiance. Each director had to be limited to only one movie – otherwise you could just list the collected works of Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles, John Ford, Billy Wilder and Martin Scorsese and end it. Anything dutiful I tossed. Don’t look for the biggest cash cow ( Titanic ), the winner of the most Oscars ( Ben-Hur ) or film -school staples like Battleship Potemkin . The 100 maverick movies on this list have one more thing in common: They’re alive. 1. The Godfather Trilogy (1972, 1974, 1990, Francis Ford Coppola): The flawed Part III barely slides in on goodwill. No matter. This is entertainment raised to the level of art: an offer you can’t refuse. Coppola gives … [Read more...] about 100 Years, 100 Maverick Movies
Cannes Review: Vicky Krieps In ‘Corsage’
It took the Empress Elisabeth’s strongest lady’s maid an hour every morning to lace her stays. The Emperor Franz-Joseph’s wife Sisi, as she was fondly known to the subjects of the Austro-Hungarian empire, was famous for the narrowness of her waist, which reputedly measured 19 and a half inches; the slightest weight gain was a matter of seething public interest. It looks very much as if Vicky Krieps , who brings great complexity to her portrait of the empress in Marie Kreutzer ’s Un Certain Regard title Corsage , shares the imperial measurements. Let’s hope that is just a trick of the camera. So much corsetry — or corsage, the word we hear much used in the royal dressing-rooms of 19th-century Vienna — doesn’t leave much room for little things like ribs. Sisi was a Bavarian princess, given a liberal upbringing by her royal but bohemian parents, who married the emperor (Florian Teichtmeister: superbly restrained) when she was 16 and was on the throne for 44 years. … [Read more...] about Cannes Review: Vicky Krieps In ‘Corsage’
Alabama’s Orion Amphitheater Celebrates Grand Opening With Brittany Howard, Drive-By Truckers
As he gazed upon the thousands gathered for the grand opening of the Orion Amphitheater in Huntsville, Alabama, last Friday, singer-songwriter John Paul White articulated the moment with his song “The Good Old Days.” “There’s something going down in this simple place I grew up in,” sang White, who was born not far down Highway 72 in Muscle Shoals and currently residing in Florence. “Boots are on the ground, singing happy days are here again.” Titled “The First Waltz,” the weekend gathering at Orion presented an array of artists with connections to Alabama — folks either raised in the area, formed in the region, or with deep ties to the historic music scene in the state’s northwest corner. Over three days, the new venue featured performances by Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, Mavis Staples, Brittany Howard , Emmylou Harris, Drive-By Truckers , St. Paul & The Broken Bones, and Waxahatchee, plus local Huntsville talent such as Translee and Deqn Sue & Kelvin Wooten. … [Read more...] about Alabama’s Orion Amphitheater Celebrates Grand Opening With Brittany Howard, Drive-By Truckers
