What Makes Tom Cruise’s Star Shine So Brightly? Directors Share Their Insights – Cannes Disruptors
Top Gun : Maverick ’s Cannes Film Festival premiere marks another high point in the movie star career of Tom Cruise . The actor turns 60 on July 3, and unlike most leading men of that age who become quicker to call for the stunt double, Cruise shows little evidence of slowing down after 43 films. If anything, his Mission: Impossible stunts seem to grow more ambitiously dangerous, not to mention the fact that he and director Doug Liman will become the first to actually shoot a space film in space for real—aboard one of Elon Musk’s SpaceX crafts with the cooperation of NASA. So how does Cruise continue to carve such a path? “I’ve gotten to work with a number of actors who’ve had great success and long careers, Tom being at the top of the heap,” says Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski. “He approaches every day with the enthusiasm that it’s his first movie, and at the same time puts the effort into it like it’s his last movie. That’s a good attitude … [Read more...] about What Makes Tom Cruise’s Star Shine So Brightly? Directors Share Their Insights – Cannes Disruptors

EXCLUSIVE : “Things have changed a little bit,” Omar Sy admits about life after Lupin . He laughs. “My parents do know what I do now.” That’s how the actor and his family like it. Low key. The Frenchman’s move to LA a decade ago was in part driven by a desire for more anonymity. In his home country, Sy is a superstar. In America, picking his kids up from school didn’t need to be a drama. “It’s still different being in LA,” he says, despite his growing fame. “Even if things have changed a bit, there’s still less attention here than it might have been in France. The guy from Lupin is not a big deal in LA.” In truth, “the guy from Lupin ” is becoming a big deal all over the world. Sy was already an established comic in France when The Intouchables took the world by storm in 2011. The film made an astonishing $426 million at the global box office and is still the biggest French film of all time. Steve Aoki Throws Horrible First Pitch At Red Sox Game, Worst Ever?
Twitter/@PoniesPodcast Steve Aoki might be able to throw a cake with pinpoint accuracy -- but he sure as hell can't do the same with a baseball, 'cause he absolutely airmailed the ceremonial first pitch at the Red Sox game on Monday night ... and it was truly awful. The DJ took the mound just minutes before Boston faced off with the Astros at Fenway Park ... and, given the results of the pitch, he's honestly probably wishing he hadn't. @steveaoki just pulled a 50cent at Fenway park pic.twitter.com/NDzbUGhp6o — Alex Potter (@PoniesPodcast) May 16, 2022 @PoniesPodcast Aoki warmed up his left arm, toed the rubber -- and then heaved a ball that went roughly 20 feet over his catcher's head. It was actually so bad, it rolled over the net behind home plate and fell into the crowd. Video shot by people in the stadium shows fans were laughing at the pitch -- because it was seriously just that bad. @steveaoki threw out tonight’s first pitch … [Read more...] about Steve Aoki Throws Horrible First Pitch At Red Sox Game, Worst Ever?
Bill Mechanic’s Guide To Overhaul So Movie Academy Can Fire On All Cylinders – Guest Column
Editors Note: Bill Mechanic is chairman and CEO of Pandemonium Films and a former top executive at Paramount, Disney and chairman and CEO of Fox Filmed Entertainment when that studio generated Titanic , X-Men, Independence Day and Braveheart . He is also a former producer of the Oscars and Oscar-nominated films like Hacksaw Ridge and Coraline , and was a member of the Academy’s Board of Governors before resigning in 2018. He weighs in on that body’s upcoming elections. A few years ago now (amazing how time flies during a pandemic), I resigned as a governor from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for two reasons: 1) there were factions on the Board of Governors who wanted everything to be status quo in spite of evidence of mismanagement as well as some foreboding changes coming to the industry; and 2) I thought a loud and clear resignation might get the silenced majority of members to speak out and force the changes. Wrong. Bad has become worse. The … [Read more...] about Bill Mechanic’s Guide To Overhaul So Movie Academy Can Fire On All Cylinders – Guest Column

The Islamic State (ISIS) have claimed responsibility for the multiple attacks on Paris Friday that killed 127 people, including 118 at an Eagles of Death Metal concert . The terror group took credit for the attacks in an online statement, French President Francois Hollande told citizens Saturday. “Eight brothers carrying explosive belts and guns targeted areas in the heart of the French capital that were specifically chosen in advance: the Stade de France during a match against Germany which that imbecile Francois Hollande was attending; the Bataclan where hundreds of idolaters were together in a party of perversity as well as other targets in the 10th, 11th and 18th arrondissement,” the group said, according to Metro . “France and those who follow its path must know that they remain the principle targets of the Islamic State. This attack is just the start of a storm and a warning for those who wish to draw lessons.” “It is an act of war that was committed by a terrorist … [Read more...] about ISIS Claim Responsibility for Terror Attacks in Paris
Bart & Fleming: How Donald Trump’s Football Fumbles Killed USFL; Why The Movie Star Is Dying; Studio Marketing Moves
Peter Bart and Mike Fleming Jr. worked together for two decades a t Daily Variety. In this occasional column, two old friends get together and grind their axes, mostly on the movie business. FLEMING : Could President Trump really be this tone deaf? After antagonizing the paranoid Sony-hacking North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, he starts the battle that shook up football Sunday throughout the National Football League. It’s hard to imagine the president could be this blissfully reckless without an endgame, lecturing the league and its athletes about a lack of patriotism when players (mostly black) kneel during the National Anthem to protest inequality and police brutality. Then he says that policing illegal hits is softening the game and hurting the ratings, with that rant closely following the revelation that the late convicted murder and ex-player Aaron Hernandez exhibited at 27 the extreme effects of CTE usually seen in former players in their 60s. The Obama White House was a … [Read more...] about Bart & Fleming: How Donald Trump’s Football Fumbles Killed USFL; Why The Movie Star Is Dying; Studio Marketing Moves
