A select number of now-dark Broadway venues will begin opening in April for a series of live- performance pop-up events that could establish the safety protocols needed for the theater industry’s eventual return. Beginning with the Shubert Organization’s Music Box Theatre on 45th Street, Broadway theaters will be among the venues housing the events of the NY PopsUp program described as a new 100-day arts festival throughout New York City and State. The series is being overseen by producers Scott Rudin and Jane Rosenthal. Though the PopsUp festival had been previously announced, the inclusion of Broadway theaters as the program’s “flexible venues” was disclosed by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo today. New Line has put in the order for a Hello Kitty movie. Described as an animated/live-action hybrid, the movie will likely bring an animated version of the popular cartoon cat into the real world, similar to the new Tom and Jerry movie. Plot details are firmly under wraps at this time. Jennifer Coyle ( DC Super Hero Girls , Bob's Burgers ) and Leo Matsuda ( Inner Workings ) have been tapped to direct Hello Kitty . The screenplay comes from Known Universe's Lindsey Beer, who's also attached to co-write an upcoming female-led Fast & Furious spinoff alongside Nicole Perlman and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Austin, Texas-based, dine-in movie theater chain Alamo Drafthouse Cinema has filed for voluntary Chapter 11 in Delaware Court and agreed to sell basically all its assets to an investor group including one of its founders Tim League. The exhibitor, which buckled under the impact of Covid-19, has 37 theaters including locations in LA, Brooklyn and northern Virginia. It’s backed by Altamont Capital. The sale is to Altamont, funds managed by affiliates of Fortress Investment, League and other original investors. The transaction will provide much-needed financing to stabilize the business. The first Alamo Drafthouse Cinema was founded in 1997 as a single-screen mom and pop repertory theater in Austin. In May, the Phoenix-based franchises of Alamo Drafthouse in Tempe, Gilbert and Chandler filed for bankruptcy.
