EXCLUSIVE : Euro producer and sales firm Anton is heading to the virtual EFM with sci-fi drama Vesper Seeds , starring Eddie Marsan ( Sherlock Holmes ), Raffiella Chapman ( Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children ), Rosy McEwen ( The Alienist ), Richard Brake ( Game of Thrones ) and Melanie Gaydos (I nsidious: The Last Key ). Shoot is due to begin in late March in Lithuania. What Went Wrong With ‘The Rhythm Section’? Action Pic Could Lose $30M+
You could tell that there was something wrong with The Rhythm Section as early as last April when Paramount didn’t include the title in its CinemaCon reel of then-intended big pics like Terminator: Dark Fate and Gemini Man. After what was buzzed to be a female James Bond pic from 007 Eon producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson, we finally learned why Paramount didn’t bet on this critically panned-audience rejected knock-off of La Femme Nikita. Rhythm Section reps Blake Lively’s lowest wide opening at the domestic box office with $2.8M. It’s an unfortunate setback for the former Gossip Girl alum, who’s proved herself to be bankable on a global basis with A Simple Favor ($97M+) and The Shallows ($119M). Sony Pictures International Productions Launches French Genre Label Parasomnia, Calls For Projects
Sony Pictures International Productions is launching Parasomnia Productions, a new label dedicated to genre movies in France. The label’s creation is in association with Marc Missonnier’s Moana Films. The aim is to promote theatrical genre pics in France, including fantasy, horror, supernatural and mock documentaries, among others. The titles will have a budget cap of 1 million euros ($1.2M) each. Parasomnia is also now launching a call to writers for original screenplays of feature projects written in French. Candidates can apply here with the closing date for submissions set on March 15, 2021. 2ND UPDATE, MONDAY 4:39 PM PT : Actuals are in from the international weekend with The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies climbing $4.6M above projections. The 1st frame cume is now $122.2M with 3D results accounting for 71% of the box office total. Increases in key overseas markets have been updated below. Expanded Hobbit holiday cheer will flow next weekend in North America, Italy, Spain and Korea. On the flipside, Exodus: Gods And Kings came in slightly lower in its cume, which is $18.2M versus an estimated $18.8M on Sunday. However, the biblical epic was up over projections in some Asian markets where audiences have been drawn by the scale and spectacle.
