Surrounded by dozens of drones, dancers and a five-second delay, Lady Gaga’s hits-heavy Super Bowl LI halftime performance today on Fox was more conventional than controversial. Beginning on top of Houston’s NRG Stadium singing parts of “God Bless America” and Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land,” last year’s Super Bowl National Anthem singer kicked off her ultimately mediocre 13-minute spectacle as the score stood at 21-3 in favor of the Atlanta Falcons over the New England Patriots. After those two potentially loaded tunes, Gaga followed by a predicted and suspiciously pre-recorded looking leap onto the field and her 2008 hit “Poker Face” followed by 2011’s “Born This Way” — with plenty of pyrotechnics but no overt mention of politics on Sunday. Beats, Rhymes and Life
“Damn, we ain’t prophets/And if you think so, you need to stop it.” A Tribe Called Quest launch that fiery verbal projectile in “Get a Hold,” a slamming, paradox-driven track from the group’s near-flawless fourth album, Beats, Rhymes and Life. A denial that serves as confirmation, the couplet snaps and frames the essence of this collection: selfless social commentary sneaked in between immodest claims to greatness. Elsewhere in “Get a Hold,” rapper Ali Shaheed Muhammad tosses an elaborate baseball metaphor (“I’ll send the mike out the park like Reggie Jackson/You’ll be the minor leaguer who sees no action”) that turns into a curveball of a challenge (“The brother well-prepared is the brother who will start”). It’s a self-congratulatory gesture that’s transformed into a universal truth. But that’s still just the surface. Veer from the main plot to the secondary one, and we’re told Tribe — which also include the rappers Q-Tip and Phife — are back “to redirect [the] vision” of … [Read more...] about Beats, Rhymes and Life
NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo Denies Former Aide’s Renewed Harassment Claims
Swirling chaos surrounding New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo deepened Wednesday as a former aide accused him of inappropriate behavior, accusations the governor called “quite simply false.” The former aide, Lindsey Boylan , who worked for the state’s economic development agency, led off a blog post on Wednesday alleging harassment on a plane flight in October of 2017 when she said the governor said that they should play strip poker. Boylan also alleged other incidents including an unsolicited kiss on the lips, frequent remarks by the governor about female colleagues and another aide telling her Cuomo had a crush on her. The post includes what she says are text messages and emails from the time. The governor is currently in the midst of a scandal for allegedly under-reporting Covid nursing home deaths in the state. NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo Apologizes For “Insensitive” Behavior As State AG Preps Independent Investigation Of Harassment Claims
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo apologized if comments he’s made to female aides were interpreted as “unwanted flirtation” but denied he ever touched or propositioned anyone. In a statement issued Sunday evening, he asked for an outside, independent review of allegations by two women. Last week, a former aide Lindsey Boylan in a blog post accused the governor of advances including an unwanted kiss and an invitation to play strip poker. Yesterday, the New York Times published an interview with another former aide, Charlotte Bennett , 25, who said the governor had harassed her last spring at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. She left the administration in November. “At work sometimes I think I am being playful and make jokes that I think are funny. I do, on occasion, tease people in what I think is a good natured way,” Cuomo said. “I do it in public and in private. You have seen me do it at briefings hundreds of times. I have teased people about their personal … [Read more...] about NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo Apologizes For “Insensitive” Behavior As State AG Preps Independent Investigation Of Harassment Claims
Golden Globes 2021: This Party Could Have Been an Email
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler said it all as they kicked off the 2021 Golden Globes : “Could this whole night have been an email? Yes.” This was the Zoom edition of the Globes: Tina was in New York’s Rainbow Room, Poehler was in L.A. at the Beverly Hilton. But unfortunately, that takes a toll on the whole point of this gala, which is cramming a Hollywood hotel room full of stars, plying them with free booze, and letting hilarity ensue. As the hosts quipped last night, it’s always a tipsy mess (“Meryl Streep, just hammered, can’t remember what movie she’s there for”) and that’s exactly why we watch. Tina said it best: “These bitches are messy. ” Fey and Poehler are the greatest award-show hosts of all time, ever since they made the Golden Globes their personal bash with their three-year run starting in 2013. But they couldn’t salvage this year’s awful show. It wasn’t messy in the “Jaqueline Bisset gets lost wandering up to the stage” sense, or the “Margaret Cho plays a Korean … [Read more...] about Golden Globes 2021: This Party Could Have Been an Email
