‘The Music Man’, ‘A Strange Loop’ And ‘Death Of A Salesman’ Among Shows Leaving Broadway On A High Note; Overall Box Office Slips To $34M

January 17, 2023 by deadline.com

Broadway lost six productions on January 15 – including the top-grossing The Music Man – to the usual January roster-thinning, and each show went out on a happy note with strong attendance. With 29 productions on the boards, Broadway grossed $33,859,988 for the week ending January 15, down about 9% from the previous week when there were 32 productions reporting figures. Total attendance was 247,667, a 10% drop commensurate with the fewer shows. Overall capacity percentage remained at about 93%. Each of the six final-week shows filled at least 90% of seats at their venues, and all reported significant increases in box office dollars from the previous week. A Strange Loop , for example, set a new house record at the Lyceum, beating (with eight performances) the 2020 record set by Jack Thorne’s A Christmas Carol (and that was for nine performances). The Music Man , meanwhile, set previous 8-show records in 53 out of 54 performance weeks and the 9-show record 51 … [Read more...] about ‘The Music Man’, ‘A Strange Loop’ And ‘Death Of A Salesman’ Among Shows Leaving Broadway On A High Note; Overall Box Office Slips To $34M

Why ‘A Man Called Otto’ Worked Outside New York City & Los Angeles With $15M-Plus Wide Opening

January 16, 2023 by deadline.com

In an age of streaming and Covid concerns when many older-skewing dramatic films find their way safely into homes, Sony Pictures rolled the dice on the Tom Hanks drama A Man Called Otto . It grossed $15.3 million in its third–weekend wide expansion over the four-day MLK weekend, well surpassing its $8M projection. The result surprised rival distributors, many who were underwhelmed initially by the Marc Forster-directed title’s exclusive four-theater run in New York City and Los Angeles over New Year’s weekend, which did a $14,000 per-theater average/$56K opening. Not to mention the lukewarm reviews (69% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes). Sony, however, always knew its had the goods with an old-fashioned, moving title, one that would win over its audience — hence its A CinemaScore and 5-star exits on ComScore/Screen Engine’s PostTrak. In some ways, it’s not shocking to see Sony hit a double at the box office; it has done so before with adult-, often female-skewing properties … [Read more...] about Why ‘A Man Called Otto’ Worked Outside New York City & Los Angeles With $15M-Plus Wide Opening

Microbudget Horror ‘Skinamarink’ Creeps Onto 600+ Screens – Specialty Preview

January 13, 2023 by deadline.com

Shudder and IFC Midnight are launching microbudget Skinamarink on a not-so-micro 629 screens, giving the viral horror pic a major push after a well-received premiere back at Fantasia-fest that just kept snowballing with strong reviews and social media love. “I was over the moon. For a horror filmmaker in Canada, [Fantasia] is like getting a Cannes screening,” says first-time filmmaker Kyle Edward Ball about the leadup to this weekend’s buzzy specialty opening. He shot the $15k feature at his parents’ home in Edmonton, Canada. In it, two children wake up in the middle of the night to find their father is missing and all the windows and doors in their home have vanished. “I’d had a nightmare when I was little. I was in my parents’ house, my parents were missing, and there was a monster. And lots of people have shared this exact same dream,” Ball tells Deadline. He should know. After film school and a stint selling video equipment, he launched a YouTube channel called Bitesized … [Read more...] about Microbudget Horror ‘Skinamarink’ Creeps Onto 600+ Screens – Specialty Preview
