In a positive sign for exhibition, and NYC reopening this Friday, Sony is moving up their release of Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway from June 11 to May 14. Not only is Sony getting a jump on summer, but it’s clear there is an appetite for family movies as the pandemic calms; i.e. last weekend Warner Bros. theatrical release of Tom & Jerry overperformed with a $14.1M opening weekend — and that’s with a same-day release on HBO Max. The hope is that by Easter weekend, the Los Angeles county theaters will be open, however, that’s on pure industry speculation. The first Peter Rabbit debuted in 2018 and ultimately grossed $351M WW. Filmmaker Will Gluck returned to direct the sequel. Currently, Disney/Marvel’s Black Widow is still dated for May 7, as summer’s theatrical opener. TBD whether that sticks or not as it relies on a number of foreign markets also being open. Peter Rabbit 2 would face off against Warner Bros./HBO Max adult western Those Who Wish Me … [Read more...] about ‘Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway’ Going Earlier This Summer

Disney Mulling Pivot Of ‘Pinocchio’, ‘Peter Pan’, ‘Cruella’ From Theatrical To Disney+ Premieres
EXCLUSIVE : No final decision has been made, but Deadline hears that the uncertainty of the future theatrical marketplace has Disney looking at launching a number of its upcoming tentpole family films on Disney+ instead of the theatrical release bows that were envisioned when the films were developed and green lit. At this point, the films being discussed to make that pivot are Cruella , the Craig Gillespie-directed live-action re-imaging of the animated classic that stars Emma Stone and Emma Thompson; the Robert Zemeckis -directed Pinocchio that has Tom Hanks starring; and Peter Pan and Wendy , the David Lowery-directed film that has Grown-ish star Yara Shahidi set to play Tinker Bell. It isn’t clear at the moment whether the films will be offered free to Disney+ subscribers, as with the Pete Docter-directed Pixar film Soul , or for a premium charge as was done with Mulan . Still, it’s a bombshell development in the fast-changing theatrical/streaming … [Read more...] about Disney Mulling Pivot Of ‘Pinocchio’, ‘Peter Pan’, ‘Cruella’ From Theatrical To Disney+ Premieres

Hong Sangsoo’s Berlin Competition Pic ‘Introduction’ Lands At Cinema Guild
Cinema Guild has taken U.S. rights to Introduction , Hong Sangsoo’s latest feature that was selected in this year’s competition program at the Berlin International Film Festival. The movie, Hong Sangsoo’s 25th as a director, follows Youngho (Shin Seokho): he goes to see his father who is tending to a famous patient; he surprises his girlfriend, Juwon (Park Miso), in Berlin where she is studying fashion design; he goes to a seaside hotel to meet his mother and brings his friend Jeongsoo (Ha Seongguk) with him. In each instance, he anticipates an important conversation. But sometimes a shared look, or a shared smoke, can mean as much as anything we could say to those close to us. The film will screen at further festivals this year before receiving a theatrical release. The deal was negotiated by Peter Kelly of Cinema Guild with Youngjoo Suh, CEO of Finecut. “From the very beginning director Hong has been a maker of highly personal films, but with Introduction he … [Read more...] about Hong Sangsoo’s Berlin Competition Pic ‘Introduction’ Lands At Cinema Guild
