One of the more prestigious stops on the Oscar-season circuit is always the annual AFI Awards Luncheon, and on Friday the American Film Institute revealed its list of Top 10 Movies and TV Programs for 2022 ( see this post for TV list ). Major studios dominated the movie list for a change, including some box office blockbusters. Streamers were AWOL for the first time since their emergence. Avatar: The Way of Water , Elvis , Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Fabelmans , Nope , She Said, T á r, Top Gun: Maverick , The Woman King, and Women Talking are the chosen 10, in addition to an AFI Special Award for The Banshees of Inisherin, which fell outside of AFI’s mostly American financed eligibility criteria but is felt to be worthy of inclusion one way or another. Taylor Swift will make her feature directorial debut with Searchlight Pictures , the company announced today. The acclaimed singer, songwriter and director has written an original script, which will be produced by the studio. Additional details will be announced at a later date. “Taylor is a once in a generation artist and storyteller. It is a genuine joy and privilege to collaborate with her as she embarks on this exciting and new creative journey,” said Searchlight Presidents David Greenbaum and Matthew Greenfield. EXCLUSIVE: Universal and director Jon Chu have finalized their ensemble for its adaptation of the global hit Wicked with Marissa Bode , Bowen Yang and Bronwyn James joining the film. Also joining the cast are Keala Settle, Aaron Teoh and Colin Michael Carmichael. They join previously announced cast members Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey and Ethan Slater. Bode will be playing Nessarose, Elphaba’s sister. The character is a wheelchair user, as is the Los Angeles-based Bode, who has been acting since the age of eight in a number of plays and musicals. Yang and James will play Pfannee and ShenShen, respectively, fellow classmates of Elphaba and Glinda at Shiz. As for Settle, she will play Miss Coddle, Teoh will play Avaric and Carmichael will play Nikidik. The film will be released in two parts as Christmas Day events in 2024 and 2025. Strange as it may seem, the Oscar for Best International Feature tends to go to movies that are universal rather than geographically specific. Last year’s winner Drive My Car spoke more about mankind’s default setting to loneliness than it did about the specifics of relationship dynamics in modern Japan, just as the Danish drunks in 2021’s Another Round got hammered in a way that was relatable to boozers in every country from Albania to Zambia. Maybe the Academy feels that real life is better left to docs, but a 2015 win for the harrowing Second World War drama Son of Saul suggests that the door is always open.
