Seattle rock outfit Sunny Day Real Estate might be in a state of flux, but guitarist Dan Hoerner is still passionate about the Washington music scene. In an effort to save legendary Spokane venue The Big Dipper, Hoerner has started an IndieGoGo campaign with a target of $50,000. Random Notes 2014: Hottest Rock Pics After learning that The Big Dipper had fallen into shambles, Hoerner bought the downtown venue with his wife, Dawson Smith-Hoerner. They’ve spent the past seven months renovating the space, but they’re still in need of a full fire sprinkler system – which is where the crowdfunding comes into play. “Spokane needs to have The Big Dipper as part of the cityscape,” Hoerner said in a statement. “It’s like the goat at the park or the horses on the Carousel or Merlyn’s or the Flour Mill. . . You have to have that stuff around for Spokane to be Spokane. We think The Big Dipper needs to be a part of the fabric of our city and we want to bring it back to life.” … [Read more...] about Help Sunny Day Real Estate’s Dan Hoerner Save Washington Club

Harry Styles Is Done ‘Emotionally Coasting’ After One Direction Days, Doesn’t Want to Be ‘Defined’ by His Music
In a new interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 radio, Harry Styles opened up about the transformative and emotional period that led to the creation of his third solo studio album Harry’s House , out May 20. For Styles, one of the most essential elements of creating the record consisted of making up for lost time — and not just what was lost to the pandemic. Styles reflected on the whirlwind start to his career when he was sorted into One Direction as a teenager and the lighting speed he maintained after going solo. “You miss so many birthdays and stuff like that. And then eventually, it’s just assumed that you’re unable to be at stuff,” Styles told Lowe. “And I think that was one of the things where I was like, ‘Oh, I want to take a second to invest some more time into balancing my life out a little bit.’ This working is not everything about who I am, it’s something I do. And I don’t want to be defined as a person necessarily by what I do all the time. I want to … [Read more...] about Harry Styles Is Done ‘Emotionally Coasting’ After One Direction Days, Doesn’t Want to Be ‘Defined’ by His Music
Kendrick Lamar Has Been Going Through Something
Throughout his career, Kendrick Lamar has never been one to relinquish control. He says as much in his verse on Big Sean’s aptly titled 2013 single . On that track, a fiery declaration of rap supremacy, Kendrick’s ability to wrangle personas and sonic textures from his voice made for one of the genre’s most significant guest verses. His layered, intentional delivery would become its own category of viral YouTube video, as fans dissected each of the Kendrick albums that have declared to be classics. Kendrick’s meticulousness is all over the release of his fifth studio album, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, though to a more chaotic effect. Here, he makes an attempt at finally releasing control, or at least his fixation with it. The result is in many ways humbling. Despite literally presenting himself as Jesus on the album’s cover, we find Kendrick in more fallible terrain than at any point in his career. Released as a double album, Mr. Morale & The Big … [Read more...] about Kendrick Lamar Has Been Going Through Something
Kevin Morby Travels to Memphis and Has a Metaphysical Reawakening on ‘This Is a Photograph’
There’s something strange about Memphis. Nestled along the muddy waters of the Mississippi River, the city lies shrouded in an aura of perpetual gloom, its skyline dominated by a mammoth, metal-clad pyramid filled not with treasures, but a Bass Pro Shop superstore. Unable to escape its murky past — yellow fever, massacres and assassinations, untimely demises — the city remains burdened by the stench of death lingering in the hot, humid air. It’s not the happiest place on earth, but it does make an ideal locale to ruminate on mortality. So, when it came time to begin work on his introspective seventh studio record, singer-songwriter Kevin Morby ventured off to Memphis, holed himself up in the city’s historic Peabody Hotel, and began his search for not only artistic inspiration but also a sort of metaphysical reawakening. The result of that Tennessee sojourn is This Is a Photograph, an album of emotional ephemera set to song, culled from lives lived and lives imagined. … [Read more...] about Kevin Morby Travels to Memphis and Has a Metaphysical Reawakening on ‘This Is a Photograph’

Young Thug Carried the Weight of Atlanta on His Shoulders. Now, It Could Crush Him
The once-triumphant world of Atlanta hip-hop is in a state of emergency. Just days after a far-reaching, 56-count indictment named Young Thug , Gunna , and more than two dozen other artists from YSL’s roster as alleged conspirators in a well-organized criminal organization, the label’s up-and-coming signee Lil Keed passed away on Saturday, May 14th. The cause of his death remains unknown. A protegé of Young Thug, Keed is not named in any indictment, and he was among the first to speak out on the allegations against YSL: In a post on his Instagram days before his death, he wrote that “YSL is not a street gang.” Young Thug, real name Jeffrey Williams, is listed as the head of the supposed organization in last week’s indictment and stands accused of violating Georgia’s RICO Act as well as participating in criminal street gang activity. Many of the charges cite his lyrics as evidence of “an overt act in furtherance of the conspiracy.” The claims drew criticism from … [Read more...] about Young Thug Carried the Weight of Atlanta on His Shoulders.
