New details on San Jose tiny homes emerge
By Emily DeRuy | [email protected] | Bay Area News Group PUBLISHED: April 25, 2018 at 3:36 pm | UPDATED: April 26, 2018 at 8:50 am With final plans for San Jose’s tiny homes expected to come before the City Council during the late summer, new details about the pilot project are beginning to emerge. The city’s Housing Department is finalizing what the homes — intended to provide temporary housing for homeless people and known formally as bridge housing — will look like and how much they will cost, said James Stagi, a member of San Jose’s homelessness response team, during a forum Wednesday on tiny homes hosted by the nonprofit SPUR. Developed with support from the state, the tiny homes are considered a relatively inexpensive way to provide dignified, stable housing for homeless people in San Jose until permanent housing becomes available. Right now, more than 4,000 people in the city don’t have housing, and the city only has about 1,000 … [Read more...] about New details on San Jose tiny homes emerge
Another mountain lion caught on camera, this time in San Jose
By Patrick May | [email protected] | Bay Area News Group PUBLISHED: April 18, 2018 at 11:02 am | UPDATED: April 19, 2018 at 5:06 am Steve Guevara is very glad this week that his pet is an indoor cat. The retired tech worker who has lived since the 1960s in the hills of East San Jose saw a first on his security camera this week: what appears to be a fully grown mountain lion. “I was looking through footage from the camera and I happened to notice this thing just walking down the sidewalk in front of my house,” said the 64-year-old Guevara. He was especially startled because he’d seen footage before of local coyote about to pounce on the outdoor cats he used to have before settling on his current indoor version. “We have a very narrow sidewalk and it was walking along, then stopped near my car for a second, then continued down the sidewalk, heading down Juliet Avenue and then heading down Rosemar Avenue.” Which is worrisome, since that’s in … [Read more...] about Another mountain lion caught on camera, this time in San Jose
How BART’s extension into San Jose will transform the South Bay
By Erin Baldassari | [email protected] | Bay Area News Group PUBLISHED: April 16, 2018 at 6:14 am | UPDATED: April 17, 2018 at 4:57 am With BART’s plans for its four-station extension into San Jose and Santa Clara expected to be approved later this month, all eyes are turning to how the extension will catalyze development. The timing couldn’t be more pivotal for San Jose, the Bay Area’s largest city by square miles but one with a smaller downtown than either San Francisco or Oakland. Long seen as a sleepy suburb more than an urban center, San Jose has begun attracting developers eager to fill its vacant lots. “What makes this critically vital, not only to (the city’s) future but also to the Valley’s future, is that the Valley has long lacked a vibrant urban center for its growth,” said San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo. “We have the opportunity now with significant transit infrastructure on its way to retrofit a city … [Read more...] about How BART’s extension into San Jose will transform the South Bay

By Sarah Ravani Published 10:10 am, Monday, April 16, 2018 A 3.9 earthquake rattled the San Jose area Monday morning, according to the United States Geological Survey. The temblor was reported at 9:39 a.m. in Alum Rock and was 8.3 kilometers in depth, the USGS reported. “I’m only seeing one earthquake in that area above a magnitude 2.5 for the last week,” said Paul Caruso, a USGS geophysicist. The quake didn’t cause any damage though some residents reported shaking in the San Jose area. “We’ve had a lot of reports that it’s been felt from San Jose and some reports in San Francisco and Santa Cruz,” Caruso said.
