Writer-director Iram Haq made me want to punch the screen on which I was watching her heartbreaking, frustrating film, What Will People Say. The story follows a Pakistani girl, Nisha (Maria Mozhdah), who's raised in Norway and who gets caught hanging out with a boy in her room, causing her parents to kidnap her to Pakistan to live with distant relatives. The quiet psychological terror and the simple, blunt manner in which it was shown stole my breath.Haq’s directorial style is reminiscent of Michael Winterbottom’s, particularly his Tess of the D’Urbervilles adaptation, Trishna, wherein a young Indian woman played by Freida Pinto endures a series of hardships until she … [Read more...] about Immigrant Drama What Will People Say Both Condemns and Forgives the Patriarchy

The trouble with most American romantic comedies in recent years is their lack of core honesty. The people whose love stories they tell are idealized, faultless except for some superficial imperfections, their relationships are dizzyingly free from sulks and spats and the stories are headed for clear, uplifting resolutions. It bravely visits especially dark compartments of real life, addresses cross-cultural taboos that both sides of the conflict will find uncomfortable, and admits that daffy antics don’t solve some enduring challenges. It’s able to portray authentic but horrible brands of stupidity with … [Read more...] about ‘The Big Sick’ holds the cure for ailing romantic comedies
