Forty-five years ago, on March 11th, 1971, the Allman Brothers Band took the stage at Bill Graham’s vaunted Fillmore East Theater in New York for the first of a series of shows that are among the most celebrated in rock history. The Allmans weren’t even supposed to be the headliners. The posters Graham had printed up read: “Johnny Winter and Elvin Bishop Group. Extra Added Attraction: Allman Brothers.” By the end of the first night, the order had been forcibly flipped on its head. During six sets of music spread across three evenings, the Allman Brothers Band — undeterred by bomb threats and a disastrous experiment with a patchwork horn section — pushed their songs to their very limits and redefined what it meant to jam onstage. The nearly 23-minute version of “Whipping Post” that closed the final night on March 13th set a high water mark in the then-fledgling tradition of … [Read more...] about Allman Brothers Band’s Legendary 1971 Fillmore East Run: An Oral History

From Polygamy to Democracy: Inside a Fundamentalist Mormon Town
On a sunny day in May, a very strange reunion is happening in the dusty desert town of Hildale, Utah. In an empty lot, tables and chairs stand in long rows, covered with plastic tablecloths that flap in the wind. At noon, the guests arrive. They come in Hondas and cargo shorts, Toyotas and tank tops, lining up at the buffet and fanning themselves with paper plates. On the other side of the table, women in pastel prairie dresses and braids dish out macaroni salad, molded Jell-O dishes and a local specialty called funeral potatoes. When the plates change hands, some smile and others shyly look down. People are nervous, and for good reason. Half of them are members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints – a polygamous sect commonly known as FLDS – and the other half are apostates, pariahs who have left the faith. They’re also the women’s brothers, sisters, cousins and aunts. And it’s the first time they’ve interacted in years. … [Read more...] about From Polygamy to Democracy: Inside a Fundamentalist Mormon Town
SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Patron Of The Artists Honors: Big Names Award Big Deeds
It was a night of reunions at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s fourth annual Patron of the Artists Awards – reunions of colleagues, activists and Friends in a gala celebration of actors and the many social causes they champion. Jennifer Aniston, Ava DuVernay, Mark Ruffalo and Greg Berlanti were the honorees, who were introduced by a stellar lineup of their friends and mentors – all in support of the good works of the foundation. Held on Thursday at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills, with cabaret-style musical interludes and a Wolfgang Puck-catered buffet afterwards, it was, in all the world, the place to be. Leonardo DiCaprio, one of Hollywood’s leading environmental and human rights activists, was on hand to present an award to fellow climate warrior Ruffalo; David Oyelowo was there to present an award to DuVernay, with whom he’s worked on three of her films, including Selma, in which he starred as Dr. Martin Luther … [Read more...] about SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Patron Of The Artists Honors: Big Names Award Big Deeds

The event also honored Los Angeles Chargers coach Anthony Lynn and entrepreneur Michael Green. Actors, studio executives and NFL players for the Los Angeles Chargers were among many who came out to the Beverly Hilton on Friday night to support and raise funds for Big Brother Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles, an organization that pairs mentors with youth from underserved Los Angeles communities. Sherry Lansing, actress and former CEO of Paramount studios told The Hollywood Reporter she's been supporting the organization for over a decade. "This is an amazing organization, where you can see the effect that one person's life has on another person's life and how it actually changes," Lansing said. "Of course, we have the wonderful Hollywood Reporter mentoring program by Stephen Galloway which is so great, and I love being a part of it." Lansing later presented producer and founder of Color Force production Nina Jacobson with the Sherry Lansing award, fittingly named after … [Read more...] about Color Force Producer Nina Jacobson Honored at Big Brother Big Sisters LA Gala
Paramount, Sister, Graham King Team For Bee Gees Biopic
EXCLUSIVE: Paramount Pictures is teaming with upstart producer-financier Sister and Bohemian Rhapsody producer Graham King to mount a movie about the Bee Gees, the trio whose worldwide sales of more than 220 million records established them as one of the biggest-selling groups of all time. While Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb first began performing together in the late 1950s, much of their popularity came after they wrote songs for Saturday Night Fever that prolonged the popularity of disco and led to one of the top-selling albums ever. Paramount has purchased the life rights to the Gibb family estate on behalf of GK’s King and will be able to use their classic songs in the movie. Sister — the venture just launched by Elisabeth Murdoch, Stacey Snider and Chernobyl producer Jane Featherstone — will come aboard as either a producing partner or a co-financier.
