After the $100 billion-plus rights deals were announced Thursday by the NFL , Wall Street analysts agreed that the league was the big winner. Still, they do see some rights holders being able to score despite the hefty price. Disney in particular gained attention for paying the lowest increase from the previous deal to the new one and also for securing exclusive streaming and Super Bowl rights. Monday Night Football will also be able to “flex” more desirable games into its schedule, unlike in the past. While the scenario of ESPN leaving the traditional ecosystem for streaming has been floated for a while – and the company insists it is premature – the new deal could provide a foundation for it. The NFL deals stretch out through 2033, meaning there will be a continuing evolution of consumer behavior and industry dynamics. No radical shifts are expected with ESPN right away, but the consensus view from analysts is that the traditional bundle will shrink dramatically, … [Read more...] about In Long-Term NFL Extension, Disney Could Start To Do End-Run Around Pay-TV Bundle, Wall Street Analysts Expect

A Primetime Pandemic: Medical Drama Showrunners Reflect On “Moral Imperative” To Address Covid-19 On-Screen
When Covid -19 touched down in the U.S. last year, reality wasn’t safe from the virus’ grasp and neither was fiction. As frontline workers and medical personnel worked tirelessly to care for coronavirus victims and stop the spread, showrunners and executive producers behind TV’s most popular medical dramas thrust the pandemic into primetime. Now a year into the historical health crisis that has killed more than 538,000 people nationwide, Deadline spoke with medical drama showrunners who reflect on the discussions that led to their coverage of the coronavirus, how they advanced a story that still has no end and where their shows will go from here. “I have never written about something while we were in the midst of it, and certainly not in a way where I don’t know what tomorrow’s going to bring,” said The Good Doctor executive producer/showrunner David Shore . “Frankly, that’s a challenge I hope I don’t face again.” Related Story Zoom Stock, Phone … [Read more...] about A Primetime Pandemic: Medical Drama Showrunners Reflect On “Moral Imperative” To Address Covid-19 On-Screen
The Last Word: RZA on Wu-Tang’s Legacy, Turning 50 and Why He Prays Daily
Even for RZA , one of the Wu-Tang Clan ’s most thoughtful members, 2019 is shaping up to be a particularly reflective year. Of Mics and Men , a four-hour documentary on the group directed by longtime hip-hop journalist turned director Sacha Jenkins, will premiere on Showtime May 10th. Getting every member to talk alongside crucial, yet mostly unknown, behind-the-scenes figures seems like a Sisyphean task. Yet Jenkins’ portrait of the group — fractious but amiable; contradictory but cohesive — highlights the influence and legacy of a crew whose internal disagreements and infighting never overshadowed their musical mission. “Wu-Tang still treat a lot of people like the FBI,” RZA tells Rolling Stone. “We kept it tight, yo, and now we’re opening up. There are things [in the documentary] we didn’t even know about each other.” Related Wu-Tang Clan Reflect on Staten Island in First 'Of Mics and Men' Trailer RZA: Wu-Tang Clan Belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of … [Read more...] about The Last Word: RZA on Wu-Tang’s Legacy, Turning 50 and Why He Prays Daily
Arnold Schwarzenegger Is Ready to Serve After Being Voted Best Hope to Fight an Alien Invasion
After a new U.K. study voted him the best hope to take on a alien invasion , Arnold Schwarzenegger says he's "ready to serve". The action star and former politician was voted number one by 2,000 British adults, though Will Smith was apparently a close second choice, thanks to his work in Independence Day . As for Schwarzenegger, he was chosen because of his Hollywood roles and his stint as Governor of California. A spokesperson for Blaze TV, who commissioned the study, says, " Arnold Schwarzenegger is a strong choice for dealing with an alien invasion, bearing in mind he's not only a screen action hero but was also Governor of California." The spokesperson went on to say that it was a bit worrisome to see celebrities like Schwarzenegger, Will Smith, Sigourney Weaver, and Tom Cruise dominate over real-life public leader like Donald Trump, Joe Biden, and Kamala Harris. Justice League 3 Would Have Been a Superman-Centric Man of Steel Sequel
Following the huge popularity of Zack Snyder's Justice League , fans of the divisive director have been left wondering what the rest of his DC cinematic universe would have looked like. Well, Snyder himself has now revealed that Justice League 3 would have essentially been Man of Steel 2 , focusing very heavily on the arc of Henry Cavill's Superman . "I had just assumed that the final movie was going to be very much a Superman movie . Like the final chapter [Justice League 3] was going to be a large percentage of Superman to just bookend the whole thing. Because if Batman died, it would have very much fallen on Superman to be the de facto leader. By the way, at that point, Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) would have been made queen of the Themyscira and she would be leading the warriors of Themyscira into battle against Darkseid herself. And Arthur (Jason Momoa's Aquaman) would be leading the armies of Atlantians." RELATED: J.K.
