It goes without saying that, for just about everyone, 2020 was a no-good, very-bad year. But for a handful of artists, it was, numbers-wise, actually a very good year indeed – the year they rose from obscurity to stardom, all without leaving their homes. But who had the best year? We can get a good idea by looking at who had the biggest growth in audio streams from January through November compared to 2019, the same methodology that powers Rolling Stone’s monthly Breakthrough 25 Chart . These are some of the artists who saw the biggest streaming gains in 2020, a group that includes emerging artists who finally broke through to the top of the charts for the first time, or total unknowns who saw overnight success on TikTok. 1. Doja Cat While Doja Cat had been in the mainstream consciousness for a couple years — ever since the brilliantly funny “Mooo!”in 2018 — 2020 was the year she fully found her footing. Masked Wolf, Coi Leray Lead Breakthrough 25 Chart
Masked Wolf, the Australian rapper behind the TikTok sensation “Astronaut in the Ocean,” leads this month’s Breakthrough 25 Chart , which ranks the fastest-rising up-and-coming artists on streaming. It’s rare that an artist rises from obscurity to the Top 10 of the RS 100 in a matter of months. But the Australian rapper pulled it off: “Astronaut in the Ocean,” which was originally released in 2019, started to take off on TikTok in late 2020, and by mid March it was in the top 10 on the RS 100. Masked Wolf also reached the Top 200 of the Artists 500. Overall, Masked Wolf grew his streams by over 23 million in March compared to February. Ana de Armas Almost Said No to Breakthrough Knives Out Role
Knives Out was the surprise hit of 2019 that initially few expected to do well. Rian Johnson's homage to Agatha Christie's style of detective fiction saw Daniel Craig affecting a heavy southern drawl in the role of Benoit Blanc, gentleman detective on the case about the murder of a reclusive millionaire. Ana de Arms featured in the movie as the dead millionaire's nurse Marta Cabrera, in a role that put her on the map in Hollywood. In an interview with Flaunt, de Armas revealed she almost passed on her career-making role since the only description for the character she received at first was "Latina, caretaker, pretty". "Things could have been very different. I really pay attention to what that little description is. I'm sure whoever did it wasn't thinking about what that meant but for me, I was just like, 'Oh no, I'm not doing this!' What do you mean-caretaker, Latina, pretty?' I'm very proud of being Cuban and being Latina and I will play the most Latina any Latina has ever … [Read more...] about Ana de Armas Almost Said No to Breakthrough Knives Out Role
Jakob Dylan on Wallflowers’ Breakthrough LP: ‘It Wasn’t Easy’
It would be logical to assume that music-industry success came easy for Jakob Dylan . Truth be told, however, at the start of his career, little was promised for the musician and frontman of the Wallflowers – not least because he was attempting to follow in the footsteps of his father, arguably the most influential songwriter of his generation. “I was hungry. I wanted more,” Dylan tells Rolling Stone , looking back on the tumultuous months and years leading up to the Wallflowers ’ breakout smash of a second album, 1996’s Bringing Down the Horse. With hit singles in “One Headlight,” “6th Avenue Heartbreak” and “Three Marlenas,” the Grammy-winning LP would go on to sell more than 4 million copies and make Dylan an overnight star in his own right.
