Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Look Of Silence was named Best Feature tonight at the 2015 IDA Documentary Awards. A followup to Oppenheimer’s Act Of Killing , the new movie explores a man’s journey to locate and confront the men who killed his brother during anti-communist purges in Indonesia. The Look of Silence won the Grand Jury Prize in Venice this year and was acquired by Drafthouse Films and Participant Media just before on the eve of that fest. Last Day Of Freedom , directed by Dee Hibbert-Jones and Nomi Talisman, won the award for Best Short. It’s an animated account of Bill Babbitt’s efforts on behalf of his brother Manny, a Vietnam War vet convicted and executed in California in 1999 in the death of an elderly woman in Sacramento. Manny Babbitt was awarded a Purple Heart while on death row. Peabody Awards: ‘Going Clear’, ‘Listen To Me Marlon’ Among Documentary & Education Winners
The Peabody Awards today announced the Documentary and Education program honorees, the final nine winners named as part of its inaugural Peabody 30. They include documentaries Going Clear : Scientology and the Prison of Belief (HBO) , Listen To Me Marlon (Showtime), What Happened, Miss Simone? (Netflix) and ISIS In Afghanistan (PBS/WGBH). EXCLUSIVE : Greenwich Entertainment has acquired North American distribution rights to well-received Holocaust documentary Love It Was Not , which will play at Hot Docs this month. Israeli filmmaker Maya Sarfaty’s film charts the remarkable and harrowing true love story between a prisoner and a Nazi. Beautiful and full of life, Helena Citron is taken to Auschwitz as a teenager (one of the first 1000 transported to the concentration camp), and soon finds unlikely solace under the protection of Franz Wunsch, a barely older SS officer who falls in love with her and her magnetic singing voice.
