EXCLUSIVE: With New York City gradually emerging from the worst of the coronavirus pandemic, one film-biz sign of life is a series of Oscar-nominated movies hitting the city’s big screens. Megaplexes and arthouses alike have been in reopening mode over the past month. In-person screenings for Zoomed-out Academy members and press are now possible for the first time since February 2020. With the April 20 deadline for Oscar ballots looming, bookings are on the rise, even at one newer spot in the awards-season mix: the Queens Drive-In . “Anything that reminds people of the communal experience, we’re all for it,” one Oscar consultant told Deadline. “We have all been stuck inside, so now even if we have to get creative and deal with safety restrictions, it’s totally worth it to try to break through and make a connection.” Related Story NYC Cinemas, Hobbled By 25% Capacity Cap, Need 50% By Memorial Day, 75% By July 4 Or "We Just Can't Make It" - NATO NY President … [Read more...] about Oscar Campaigners Flock To Queens Drive-In As In-Person Screenings Resume Citywide Ahead Of Ballot Deadline

The Battle Over The Filibuster Counters The Myth Of ‘Mr. Smith’
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W. VA.) seemingly dashed any hopes of Democrats abolishing the filibuster anytime soon when he wrote last week that the legislative maneuver was a “critical tool” to protecting “our democratic form of government.” That’s a far different view than that of former President Barack Obama, who called it a “Jim Crow relic,” along with a slew of other critics. But an idealized view of the filibuster as a force for good isn’t an outlier; it’s the way that many students, of past generations and even today, are first exposed to it, via the 1939 Frank Capra classic Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. As much of a relic as the movie is, the climatic scene, in which Jefferson Smith (Jimmy Stewart) stages a nearly 24- hour filibuster against corruption and back-room dealing among his colleagues, has endured. It’s still used as a teaching tool and, in coverage of the latest debate, comes up as a common pop culture reference point. It’s helped shape perceptions of what … [Read more...] about The Battle Over The Filibuster Counters The Myth Of ‘Mr. Smith’

No. 20 ‘Interstellar’ – 2014 Most Valuable Movie Blockbuster Tournament
When it comes to evaluating the financial performance of top movies, it isn’t about what a film grosses at the box office. The true tale is told when production budgets, P&A, talent participations and other costs collide with box office grosses, and ancillary revenues from VOD to DVD and TV. To get close to that mysterious end of the equation, Deadline last year hatched our first Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament. Using data culled by seasoned and trusted sources, we pitted the 16 biggest-grossing films of 2013 against one another, seeded like the March Madness teams. We found that while a superior hoops squad can go cold and get eliminated in an early-round upset, there was little suspense until our later rounds. This year, we’re counting down from No. 20. We will run five films per day in separate posts, name a winner Friday and present the data en masse on Monday. The difficult in ascertaining exactly what talent gets after cash break keeps this from being a perfect … [Read more...] about No. 20 ‘Interstellar’ – 2014 Most Valuable Movie Blockbuster Tournament

Godzilla vs. Kong was able to easily win its second consecutive box office weekend with $13.2 million. Adam Wingard's latest monster movie has been crushing it overseas too. As of this writing, the movie has earned $310.7 million globally, which is pretty impressive considering that it is currently streaming on HBO Max for paid subscribers. It appears that more and more people in North America are willing to head into a movie theater now that the vaccine has started to become more available. In addition to winning the box office weekend, Godzilla Vs Kong also broke a new pandemic record. The movie has brought in $69.5 million domestically, which shatters the previous record holder, Christopher Nolan's 2020 thriller Tenet . Warner Bros. currently has four out of the five top five earners of the pandemic. Tenet is number two with $58.5 million, while Wonder Woman 1984 follows with $46.2 million and Tom & Jerry at $40.3 million. Universal's The Croods: A New Age , … [Read more...] about Godzilla Vs.
