‘RRR’ Scores Historic Oscar Nomination For Best Original Song, But Shut Out Of Other Major Races
S.S. Rajamouli ’s Indian epic RRR received an Oscar nomination this morning for Best Original Song “ Naatu Naatu ,” but it missed out on crossing into other major categories despite strong campaigning and a groundswell of support. “Naatu Naatu,” with music by M.M. Keeravaani and lyric by Chandrabose, has had folks dancing in the aisles for months and was considered a shoo-in for an Academy nod. The song previously won top honors at the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes and was the first song from an Indian film to be shortlisted for an Oscar. (Indian composer AR Rahman previously won Best Original Song and Best Original Score for his work on Slumdog Millionaire which was a British production). However, coming off of a New York Film Critics Circle win for Best Director and with Rajamouli making the rounds and charming at screenings and Q&As for Academy and guild members, there seemed to be potential in further Oscar nominations. ‘Marcel The Shell With Shoes On’ Co-Creator & Star Jenny Slate On Film’s Oscar Nomination: “I Just Can’t Stop Crying”
After her animated film received an Oscar nomination today, Jenny Slate said she is completely overwhelmed. “I thought I’d be more energetic, but I’m really shocked,” she told Deadline. “I sort of felt like a bit smoothed over and I felt really calm … now I just can’t stop crying.” Marcel the Shell with Shoes On , which Slate produced and co-created, snagged an Oscar nomination today for Best Animated Feature category. Slate also voiced the title character. The film is based on the character of Marcel, who was created by Slate and director Dean Fleischer Camp for a digital short back in 2010. Slate said she had no idea Marcel would garner this much acclaim when she first voiced the small shell. “At that time I was kind of at a low point in my career and sort of felt like I had drained the reserves of my creativity,” she said. “But I have always been a person who generally felt connected to a hope that happy and extraordinary things might come my way.” RELATED: … [Read more...] about ‘Marcel The Shell With Shoes On’ Co-Creator & Star Jenny Slate On Film’s Oscar Nomination: “I Just Can’t Stop Crying”
Baz Luhrmann & Catherine Martin Reflect On ‘Elvis’ Oscar Nominations Following “Some Really Difficult Days”
Elvis scooped up eight Oscar nominations on Tuesday, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Austin Butler in the title role. The good news dovetailed neatly with the birthday of director Baz Luhrmann ’s wife and producing partner Catherine Martin , and their wedding anniversary, and yet tragically, it also comes just two days after the pair attended the funeral service for Elvis Presley’s daughter Lisa Marie Presley. Speaking to Deadline from Paris, Luhrmann and Martin reflected on the news, and what it has meant to them to bring Elvis’ legacy to the forefront and to restore an accurate public representation of him. “We’ve had some really difficult days,” Luhrmann said, “and it was good to just get away and be here for this.” RELATED: Austin Butler On ‘Dune Part 2’ And Landing First Oscar Nom For ’Elvis‘ After Lisa Marie Presley’s Death Asked how he feels having restored Elvis’s image to his family and fans, he said, “It’s more a sense of fairness … [Read more...] about Baz Luhrmann & Catherine Martin Reflect On ‘Elvis’ Oscar Nominations Following “Some Really Difficult Days”
Ke Huy Quan & Brendan Fraser Cap Improbable Career Comebacks With Oscar Nominations
Hollywood is notoriously fickle. It can create stars overnight and toss them aside as quickly, moving on to the next big thing. Once you are gone, you are usually forgotten, with no second shot at stardom and no career do-overs. Beating the odds, we have not one but two big comeback stories this awards season, Ke Huy Quan and Brendan Fraser . They have both emerged as major awards contenders for the first time in their careers with their first major movie roles in decades, in Everything Everywhere All At Once (Quan) and The Whale (Fraser). Their return to Hollywood’s top echelon was reaffirmed this morning when both received their first Oscar nomination — for Fraser, Lead Actor, and for Quan, Supporting Actor. Quan was one of the biggest child stars of the 1980s with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and The Goonies; Fraser was one of the biggest action stars of the late 1990s and early 2000s with The Mummy franchise and George of the Jungle. Then … [Read more...] about Ke Huy Quan & Brendan Fraser Cap Improbable Career Comebacks With Oscar Nominations
Oscar Nominations Analysis: Blockbusters, Acclaimed Indies, A Couple Of Surprises, Elvis & Marilyn Liven Up Mostly Predictable List
A commenter named Brad replied to an Oscar predictions piece I put up over the weekend and said: “There used to be a time when I anticipated the Oscar Nominations. But I feel that time has not been good to the Academy Awards and with so many awards ceremonies these days, the Oscars do not seem special like they once did.” He has a point, as did Cate Blanchett when, during her Critics Choice Award acceptance speech , she wished for the “televised awards horserace” to end and everyone be declared a winner. There is so much noise, so many precursor groups handing out awards that the Oscar nominations look more often like a rubber stamp these days, even if it clearly remains the only film award truly coveted. At 95 years old, it still will be the first line in any winner or nominee’s obit. But looking at today’s list of nominees , particularly Best Picture, can we say that any of them are actually surprising? Stunners? Shockers? Are any of them not the names we … [Read more...] about Oscar Nominations Analysis: Blockbusters, Acclaimed Indies, A Couple Of Surprises, Elvis & Marilyn Liven Up Mostly Predictable List
Andrea Riseborough Reacts To Surprise Best Actress Oscar Nomination For ‘To Leslie’: “I’m Not Entirely Sure How This Happened”
Andrea Riseborough ’s late-blooming word-of-mouth awards campaign for her title role in To Leslie has resulted in the British star’s first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, upending received wisdom about the direction of this year’s race. Riseborough joins Cate Blanchett, Ana de Armas, Michelle Williams and Michelle Yeoh in this year’s Oscar Best Actress race. “I’m astounded,” she told Deadline this morning. “It’s such an unexpected ray of light. It was so hard to believe it might ever happen because we really hadn’t been in the running for anything else. Even though we had a lot of support, the idea it might actually happen seemed so far away.” So how did it happen? Directed by Michael Morris and based on the semi-autobiographical experience of writer Ryan Binaco, To Leslie premiered at last year’s SXSW but flew largely under the radar, grossing a little over $27,000 on an underwhelming release by Momentum Pictures in October. That makes it among the … [Read more...] about Andrea Riseborough Reacts To Surprise Best Actress Oscar Nomination For ‘To Leslie’: “I’m Not Entirely Sure How This Happened”
Female Directors Shut Out Of This Year’s Oscar Nominations
The Oscar nominations revealed Tuesday did not include any female directors, extending a trend across this season’s awards landscape. It means the modest streak of women winning the Directing Oscar will end at two, after back-to-back wins the past two years with Jane Campion ( The Power of the Dog ) in 2022 and Chloé Zhao ( Nomadland ) in 2021. This morning, the names called were Martin McDonagh ( The Banshees of Inisherin ), Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert ( Everything Everywhere All at Once ), Steven Spielberg ( The Fabelmans ), Todd Field ( Tár ) and Ruben Östlund ( Triangle of Sadness ). Earlier this season, the mostly apples-to-apples Directors Guild also went with McDonagh, Kwan & Scheinert, Field and Spielberg, but had Top Gun: Maverick ‘s Joseph Kosinski rounding out its five. The DGA did nominate four women for First-Time Feature Film award: Alice Diop ( Saint Omer ), Audrey Diwan ( Happening ), Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovic ( Murina ) … [Read more...] about Female Directors Shut Out Of This Year’s Oscar Nominations
‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ Gets Best Pic Nomination, 3 Others; James Cameron Snub Continues Franchise’s Complicated Oscar Journey
In the wake of the breathtaking Avatar: The Way of Water soaring past the $2 billion global gross mark, the James Cameron -directed epic scored a best picture nomination, along with noms for production design, sound and visual effects. The snub of Cameron’s monumental achievement in the best director category continues the franchise’s complex relationship with Oscar. Cameron surely breathed a sigh of relief when the film performed as robustly as he hoped it would, clearing the way for three or four sequels as Avatar is set up for the next few years to establish itself as a massive franchise on the order of Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings. Many felt that it was perhaps the biggest bet — the bulk of the sequels were shot at once — since LOTR , when New Line chief Bob Shaye rolled the dice and empowered director Peter Jackson to shoot all three installments in one massive shoot in New Zealand. The first two films got a swarm of nominations including best … [Read more...] about ‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ Gets Best Pic Nomination, 3 Others; James Cameron Snub Continues Franchise’s Complicated Oscar Journey
