Families of Trans Kids Are Banding Together to Save Their Children

June 28, 2022 by www.rollingstone.com

As Texas slowly turned up the heat on trans youth and their families over the past year, Violet didn’t want to be the frog trapped in the pot of boiling water. “The frog doesn’t realize it until it’s getting cooked,” she says. “We could see where things were going and we thought, ‘We really need to not wait until it’s too late.’” Violet, whose name has been changed because she fears potential prosecution from her former home state, is the parent of two transgender children. Last year, she decided it was time to leave Texas after Gov. Greg Abbott signed a law banning trans students from playing on sports teams that align with their gender identity. Things only got worse from there. In February, Abbott issued an order directing the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services to conduct “investigations of any reported instances of Texas children being subjected to abusive gender-transitioning procedures,” according to his office . Although Violet knew she … [Read more...] about Families of Trans Kids Are Banding Together to Save Their Children

Pilots Are Airlifting Patients Out of Red States to Get Abortions

June 29, 2022 by www.rollingstone.com

The patient’s first two appointments were canceled. When Oklahoma’s governor signed the nation’s strictest abortion ban into law on May 26, her third was moved from a Planned Parenthood in Oklahoma City to the closest clinic with an appointment roughly a 10-hour round trip drive away, in Kansas. (The local chapter, Planned Parenthood Great Plains, covers four states — Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas — and books patients across all four.) “It was a goddamn mess,” says Alison Dreith, director of strategic partnerships at Midwest Access Coalition, a Chicago-based abortion fund. A companion managed to book a rental car and get the patient to Kansas, where she expected to have a medication abortion. “When she got to Kansas,” Dreith says, “She was too far along for them to do a medication abortion. They rescheduled her because they didn’t have appointments that day for a surgical… which pissed me the fuck off because you had this person come all the way from Oklahoma, and now … [Read more...] about Pilots Are Airlifting Patients Out of Red States to Get Abortions

As international Covid testing requirements and masking lets up, travel is on everybody’s mind. A recent statistic released by the Airlines Reporting Corp. showed a 135% increase in airline ticket sales this May compared to the same time last year. That spike only accounts for air travel , but people are still going camping , and taking road trips in droves this summer, even more than they did pre-pandemic in some cases. Traveling is exciting, but to make it successful you’ll need the right gear. Wearing earbuds that conk out halfway through your flight, or realizing your U.S. chargers won’t fit in European outlets can cause unnecessary stress. You’re supposed to unwind, not worry. Whether you’re a well-seasoned traveler looking for upgrades, or someone about to take their first big trip through the country or across the pond, … [Read more...] about Air Travel is Up 135% Since Last Year — This is What You Need for Your Next Trip

VidCon 2022 Was a Candy-Colored, Covid-Spreading, Content-Creating Extravaganza

June 29, 2022 by www.rollingstone.com

After two years on hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, VidCon — the annual convention for fans, creators, and online platform industry types — returned to the Anaheim Convention Center last week. But it looked a little different than usual. For starters, the ear-piercing shrieks of fans lining up to meet their favorite creators were just a little quieter. With 50,000 attendees as opposed to 2019’s 75,000, the convention was somewhat smaller than it previously had been. Further, unlike VidCons of years past, some attendees were wearing masks, albeit an infinitesimally small number among the hordes of preteens angling for photo ops with their favorite creators (days later, several attendees of VidCon, which required proof of vaccination or a recent Covid test for entry, began reporting on social media that they had tested positive for COVID after the event). Perhaps most importantly, however, TikTok , the short-form video platform that dominated the app store starting in … [Read more...] about VidCon 2022 Was a Candy-Colored, Covid-Spreading, Content-Creating Extravaganza

It’s Quinta Brunson’s World and We’re All Just Laughing in It

June 28, 2022 by www.rollingstone.com

Quinta Brunson — creator, executive producer, and star of the hit comedy Abbott Elementary — could moonlight as a tour guide. She meets me at the Warner Bros. Television building on a crisp day in April. The building, tucked behind bushes and an open-air set of a quaint city street, is boxy and drab, one of the least magnificent structures I see on the massive lot. And yet Brunson has a way of showing its hidden magic. Flanked by a publicist and a studio rep, we load into a golf cart, where Brunson leads me on a tour of the WB campus — it also just happens to be a tour of one of the most exciting young careers in comedy. In fact, while we chat in front of an outdoor set of a white church used in Gilmore Girls and Pretty Little Liars , an eager fan on a stretch cart packed with visitors on a guided tour loudly points her out. In 2018, she was cast as a lead in a CW series called The End of the World As We Know It after auditioning in this very building. The show never … [Read more...] about It’s Quinta Brunson’s World and We’re All Just Laughing in It

RS Recommends: Perk Up Your Morning Brew With These Coffee Subscription Boxes

June 29, 2022 by www.rollingstone.com

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Rolling Stone may receive an affiliate commission. Coffee is both a science and an art, and everyone has strong opinions about the best kettle , grinder , or machine necessary to make that perfect cup. But the star of the show when it comes to flavor is always good-quality coffee beans. It’s never been easier to get coffee beans delivered too, especially if you’re not really leaving the house or avoiding packed grocery stores and cafes. Reports confirm that 47% of folks say they’re now ordering their coffee online, with another nearly 12% receiving theirs via subscription. Part of this buzz seems to be a hold over from the “stocking up” rush seen in the earlier days of stay-at-home orders. But if you still feel uncomfortable venturing out in public — even for your java fix — you’re not alone. Several companies have been pivoting to deliver everything from booze to meal kits … [Read more...] about RS Recommends: Perk Up Your Morning Brew With These Coffee Subscription Boxes

Festival In Focus: Karlovy Vary’s Industry Strand Eastern Promises Set To Up Its Game For The 56th Edition

June 29, 2022 by deadline.com

Eastern Promises , the popular industry strand of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival , has spent the last two years relegated to an online only event due to Covid-19, but the upcoming seventh edition of the event is now gearing up for what it hopes to be a vintage year as it returns in a physical capacity on Sunday, June 3. The three-day event, which looks to promote regional and international filmmakers with distributors, sales agents, producers and festival programmers, will unveil 35 selected film projects – all at various stages —  through its Works in Progress, Works in Development – Feature Launch, First Cut+ Works in Progress and Odesa International Film Festival Works in Progress presentations. The most promising projects will receive awards totalling up to €125,000 ($151,850). “The most important thing right now is that we’re back in a physical and on-site situation,” says head of film industry office Hugo Rosák. “We tried the online edition in the … [Read more...] about Festival In Focus: Karlovy Vary’s Industry Strand Eastern Promises Set To Up Its Game For The 56th Edition

January 9, 2022 by deadline.com

SUNDAY AM WRITETHRU: Despite Omicron sending many back to the comfort of their households for January, people are still going to the movies. Specifically, Sony /Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home , which is snatching a fourth weekend of $33M at 4,012 locations, a -41% ease from weekend 3. Proof that Spidey is immune to Omicron: He’s coming in higher than the $30M everyone was expecting yesterday. His fourth session take here also bests that of previous big Christmas Star Wars titles, including Last Jedi ($23.7M), Rogue One ($22M) and Rise of Skywalker ($15.1M). However, he’s behind Force Awakens’ $42.3M. Spider-Man took in $8.3M on Friday, and by end of today will raise its cume to $668.7M , which will make it the sixth-highest grossing movie at the domestic box office, ahead of James Cameron’s Titanic ($659.3M). Jason Kander Was a Rising Star in the Democratic Party. Then He Went on Suicide Watch

June 28, 2022 by www.rollingstone.com

Scandal, drugs, assault, outright crime — American voters have learned to forgive all of these. But historically, there’s been one thing that no politician returns from: mental illness. No one knew that better than Jason Kander, a former Army Captain who returned from Afghanistan and immediately began a meteoric political ascent, one that took him from the Missouri House of Representatives at the age of 27 to the first name on Barack Obama’s lips when he was asked in 2017 who he saw as the future of the Democratic party. Pollsters polled, cameras flashed, tv interview requests came flooding in. Jason’s star got shinier and shinier. At night, though, when his world grew quiet, Jason was unable to sleep for fear of paralyzing nightmares. He was on high alert every waking minute, and increasingly distant from his wife and infant son. Like many vets, Jason had left the war, but the war hadn’t left him. He didn’t want to believe he was suffering from PTSD because he had never heard of … [Read more...] about Jason Kander Was a Rising Star in the Democratic Party. Then He Went on Suicide Watch

June 29, 2022 by www.filmibeat.com

Taapsee Pannu and Shah Rukh Khan will be teaming up together for the first time in Rajkumar Hirani's Dunki. In her recent interaction with a news agency, the Thappad actress opened up on the same. She said that working with King Khan feels like a personal achievement and added that his films were her journey to Bollywood. Taapsee told PTI, "For me, introduction to films happened in college. I haven't seen many films in theatre in school (days) because we would hardly watch films in my house. So, a lot of Shah Rukh Khan films became my first few films that I have seen." She told the news agency that working on Dunki with two of her favourites, Shah Rukh Khan and Rajkumar Hirani is like a dream come true for her. She said that she feels deeply connected with the superstar's journey as they both hail from Delhi and started from scratch. "When you end up getting the opportunity to work with him, it becomes the golden opportunity.
