This year’s A Capitol Fourth , the annual televised Independence Day concert, will feature a celebration of West Side Story ‘s 65th anniversary, headlined by Chita Rivera , and a centennial salute to the Lincoln Memorial. The event, to be broadcast on PBS , will be hosted by Mickey Guyton , with performances by Darren Criss, Yolanda Adams, Gloria Gaynor, Keb’ Mo’, Emily Bear, Andy Grammer and Loren Allred with the National Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Jack Everly. Rachel Platten will do a special tribute to military heroes and their families, as she performs her song Stand By You. Baz Luhrmann ’s box-office-topping new movie Elvis does manage to show the powerhouse singer Big Mama Thornton (played by Shonka Dukureh) performing “Hound Dog,” a song she recorded in 1952, four years before Elvis Presley . But it leaves out two very significant players: songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller , who wrote “Hound Dog” as teenagers for Thornton, and went on to write “Jailhouse Rock,” “You’re So Square (I Don’t Care),” “Trouble,” and other hits for Presley himself (as well as “Stand By Me” for Ben E. King and countless other classic songs).
