BAFTA Says Older White Women Count As Diversity As It Defends Big Drop In TV Nominations For People Of Color

BAFTA has celebrated the number of older white women nominated for best actress at its Television Awards amid a steep decline in ethnic diversity in performance shortlists. All six nominees in the Leading Actress category are white, with some observing that Ambika Mod had been overlooked for her performance in BBC/AMC series This Is Going To Hurt , which is leading the chase for a bronze mask with a total of six nominations. Asked if BAFTA had hoped for a different outcome, CEO Jane Millichip said: “There is representation in that category in the fact that if you look at the age of the actresses and the roles written for them, it is extraordinary. This is something that we’ve discussed for a long time in the television and film world: Are the roles written for women over the age of 40? Cillian Murphy Receives First BAFTA TV Award Nomination For ‘Peaky Blinders’

Cillian Murphy ’s final turn as Tommy Shelby in the Peaky Blinders television series has earned him his first BAFTA TV Awards nomination. The actor will compete in the Leading Actor category, receiving recognition for six seasons of work in BBC1’s hit gangster drama. His only previous nomination from BAFTA was for the Rising Star prize at the 2007 Film Awards. Murphy, who secured Peaky Blinders ‘ only nomination, is joined by another first-time TV nominee in the Leading Actor race: Gary Oldman, who is up for the prize for his performance as spy Jackson Lamb in Apple TV+’s Slow Horses. BAFTA TV Awards Nominations: ‘This Is Going To Hurt’ & ‘The Responder’ Lead Chase For Prizes

BAFTA has pulled the curtain back on its Television Awards nominations, and This Is Going To Hurt and The Responder are leading the chase for a famous bronze mask. The BBC dramas each have six nominations across the BAFTA Television Awards and BAFTA Television Craft Awards, including Leading Actor for Ben Whishaw and Martin Freeman. Whishaw plays junior doctor Adam Kay in This Is Going To Hurt , which was co-produced by AMC. Freeman features as an urgent response police officer in The Responder . This Is Going To Hurt is nominated for Mini Series, while The Responder will compete in the Drama Series race. Adam Kay and Tony Schumacher will both do battle in the Writer: Drama category at the BAFTA Television Craft Awards. The BBC has a total of 81 nominations, putting it comfortably ahead of its nearest rival Channel 4, which has 33 nominations. Netflix scooped 24 nominations, while Apple TV+ was behind with 15.
