President Joe Biden informed Congress today that he would be ending the dual states of emergency that were declared to help address the Covid pandemic, according to multiple sources . There are currently a public health emergency and a national emergency related to the virus, both of which were extended recently. The declarations will be lifted on May 11, reported the Washington Post, and reclassify Covid as an endemic threat. A senior administration official told the Post that the intervening period will allow government agencies and others to “begin the process of a smooth operational wind-down of the flexibilities enabled by the COVID-19 emergency declarations.” Former President Donald Trump initially declared the pandemic a national emergency in March 2020. The dual emergencies have been repeatedly extended since then. The idea of winding down the emergencies was floated weeks ago when they were last updated . … [Read more...] about Joe Biden Announces He Will End Covid State Of Emergency Declarations

NYC Mayor Laments Eagles Lights On Empire State Building, ‘That Got Away From Us’

‘X-Factor’ Honchos — We’re Willing to Pay Winner EVEN MORE than $5 Mil
If the $5 MILLION recording contract wasn't enough ... TMZ has learned the people behind ' X Factor ' are willing to shell out MILLIONS more to the winner ... depending on how hard the soon-to-crowned champ works after the show. Here's the deal -- each contestant signed a contract which states that if they win the show, they will get their $5 million over a period of 5 years ... $1 mil-per-year. According to the contract, obtained by TMZ, the $5 mil is an "advance" on any earnings the winner brings in from record sales, the official tour and more ... during the 5 years. But the earnings are not capped at $5 mil -- if the performer generates more than $5 mil during the length of the deal, that person will get a cut of the profits. The more they sell, the more they rake in. And there's more ... the singer is entitled to even more cash for any live performances outside of the official tour -- 30% of royalties from each gig -- and that money does NOT count toward the … [Read more...] about ‘X-Factor’ Honchos — We’re Willing to Pay Winner EVEN MORE than $5 Mil

With only two days left of bargaining, their strike pledge comes after months of negotiations for a new contract. According to the guild, 98% of the 91-member HuffPost Union signed on to the strike pledge. “We are prepared to strike,” says the strike pledge, which was delivered to management today. “We, the members of the HuffPost Union, are committed to a collective bargaining agreement that reflects the realities of the economy, our changing industry, and the issues most important to our unit. WGA East Wins Unionization Vote At ‘Pawn Stars’ Producer Leftfield Entertainment
In a major organizing victory, the WGA East has won an NLRB-sanctioned election to unionize Leftfield Entertainment , the largest reality TV company on the East Coast whose shows include Pawn Stars , The Real Housewives Of New Jersey, Monster In-Laws and Counting Cars . The union still has to negotiate a contract with Leftfield, however, and that may prove difficult, as the company shot back today that the guild’s organizing campaign was based on “lies” and “unrealistic promises.” The vote to unionize the writer-producers at Leftfield carried by a 2-to-1 margin – 121 in favor to 67 against. “It’s time for production companies like Leftfield to recognize that unionization is here to stay in nonfiction TV,” said WGA East executive director Lowell Peterson. “Writer-producers know how important collective bargaining is to improving their working conditions and to building sustainable careers.” The victory is the biggest to date for the guild in the reality TV field, … [Read more...] about WGA East Wins Unionization Vote At ‘Pawn Stars’ Producer Leftfield Entertainment
WGA East Calls for Union Exemption To Obamacare’s ‘Cadillac Tax’
The WGA East today called for all union health plans to be exempted from the Affordable Care Act’s so-called “Cadillac Tax,” a 40% nondeductible excise tax that is scheduled to go into effect in 2018 on employers who provide high-end health benefits to their workers. In comments filed today with the IRS and the U.S. Department of Treasury, the guild said that “the Cadillac Tax would strip away benefits from the basic package of compensation guild members have struggled for decades to win for themselves and their families.” WGAE contends that “unions and employers negotiate contributions to multiemployer health plans that reflect the economic reality of a particular industry and allocates compensation in a way that meets the employees’ actual needs and aspirations.” The guild said that “to strip hard-working men and women of these benefits” will “deprive them of the benefit of their bargain.” The Cadillac Tax was added to Obamacare on the theory that high-end union health … [Read more...] about WGA East Calls for Union Exemption To Obamacare’s ‘Cadillac Tax’
