EXCLUSIVE: It might not be too much of a stretch to say that Bert Fields has played a role in almost every great Hollywood legal battle of the last 30 years. The Cardinal Richelieu of Tinseltown attorneys, Fields counts among his accomplishments successfully taking on Disney and Michael Eisner to the tune of a $250 million payout for Jeffrey Katzenberg back in the late 1990s. The Greenberg Glusker Fields Claman & Machtinger partner has also represented Tom Cruise, the Weinsteins, James Cameron , Warren Beatty against Paramount over Reds , the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Godfather author Mario Puzo and his estate and other heavyweights, including studios like Universal. Snared for a time in the FBI’s spotlight over his hiring of Anthony Pellicano , Fields eventually emerged unscathed from the scandal — a fate not shared by many who employed the still-imprisoned P.I. … [Read more...] about Bert Fields Talks Disney Ban, George Lucas, James Cameron, Harvey Weinstein, Napoleon & The Next Big Thing

David McCullough Dies: Pulitzer Prize Winning Historian Was 89
David McCullough , the two-time Pulitzer Prize winning historian whose biographies gave character and compelling narratives to figures and moments that make up the fabric of the American experience, has died. He was 89. His publisher, Simon & Schuster, said that McCullough died on Sunday at his home in Hingman, MA, surrounded by his five children. Two of McCullough’s most famous works, presidential biographies of Harry Truman in 1992 and John Adams in 2001, not only won Pulitzer Prizes but were turned into TV miniseries. His gift for storytelling translated into that of a narrator of documentaries like Ken Burns’ Civil War . McCullough received the National Book Award for The Path Between the Seas, about the building of the Panama Canal, and Mornings on Horseback, a biography of Theodore Roosevelt. Other best sellers included The Johnstown Flood , The Great Bridge , Brave Companions , 1776 , The Greater Journey , The Wright Brothers , and … [Read more...] about David McCullough Dies: Pulitzer Prize Winning Historian Was 89

EXCLUSIVE : Daniel Brühl ( Inglourious Basterds ) has signed on to star alongside Paul Bettany and Jeremy Pope in the upcoming Warhol-Basquiat film The Collaboration , based on the acclaimed play by four-time Oscar nominee Anthony McCarten , which heads into production in Boston in September. The Collaboration revolves around the relationship between the two iconic artists, starting in the summer of 1984. International superstar Andy Warhol (Bettany) and the art scene’s newest wunderkind, Jean-Michel Basquiat (Pope), agree to work together on what may be the most talked about exhibition in the history of modern art. But can these two creative giants co-exist with such opposing views of life and art? (Things worked out in the end, of course, with Warhol and Basquiat’s works now selling for tens of millions.) Brühl has been tapped for the role of Bruno Bischofberger, the legendary art impresario who first suggested a series of collaborations between Basquiat and … [Read more...] about Daniel Brühl Joins Warhol-Basquiat Film ‘The Collaboration’ Based On Anthony McCarten’s Play
The Band’s Essential Albums
When Eric Clapton first heard the Band , he knew he was done with Cream. “I’m in the wrong place with the wrong people doing the wrong thing,” the guitarist later recalled thinking, and he wasn’t the only one left stunned by the group’s laid-back revolution. Synthesizing R&B, country, blues and early rock with chops seasoned by years on the road with Ronnie Hawkins and Bob Dylan , Canadians Robbie Robertson , Richard Manuel, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson , along with their Arkansas-born drummer-singer Levon Helm — once collectively known as the Hawks, and, later on, the Crackers — made everything old-timey, rural and ramshackle seem profoundly cool. For the next eight years, they would craft some of rock’s earthiest, grooviest and most yearning sounds. Here’s our comprehensive guide to their legacy on record, from Big Pink to The Basement Tapes and beyond. Must Have Music From Big Pink (1968) “We were rebelling against the rebellion,” Robbie … [Read more...] about The Band’s Essential Albums
Netflix’s Ted Sarandos Eyes 20 Original Series A Year, Rips Theater Owners Again – NATPE
As Netflix continues to expand internationally, Ted Sarandos said he’s got sights on offering as many as 20 original scripted series per year as he sat in conversation with Netflix-friendly creators Vince Gilligan ( Breaking Bad ) and Mitch Hurwitz ( Arrested Development ) on Wednesday at NATPE . “I think we can launch — successfully, high quality — around 20 original scripted shows a year, which means every 2 1/2 to three weeks you’re launching a new season or a new show on Netflix meant to be for really diverse tastes all around the world,” he said. The question came in reference to Netflix’s recent original series Marco Polo , a $90 million production that drew mixed reviews but, he said, played extremely well overseas. “The launch and completion rates were comparable with Orange Is The New Black and House Of Cards , and more than that it’s happening around the world at the same time,” Sarandos said. “The season 2 pickup was based on that performance.” … [Read more...] about Netflix’s Ted Sarandos Eyes 20 Original Series A Year, Rips Theater Owners Again – NATPE
YoungBoy Never Broke Again’s ‘The Last Slimeto’ Is a Thrilling Mess
Over four years after signing with Atlantic Records and releasing his self-described debut album, Until Death Call My Name , Youngboy Never Broke Again remains an enigma. The 22-year-old North Baton Rouge rapper isn’t a clear innovator like Playboi Carti and isn’t a symbol for an intensely creative scene like his rival Lil Durk’s Chicago or Pop Smoke’s Brooklyn. He’s landed four Billboard number-one projects in the past two years, building a massive online following in the process. (Like most social media “hives,” his fans, who use tags like #YBB — YoungBoy Better — can be overly aggressive .) The media is obligated to cover him as a result, and journalists usually refract him to recognizable tropes, like the massive amount of content he releases, or the staggering number of court cases he’s involved in, without trying to engage with his music. (He beat gun possession charges in Los Angeles last month and is awaiting trial on a similar case in Louisiana.) … [Read more...] about YoungBoy Never Broke Again’s ‘The Last Slimeto’ Is a Thrilling Mess
