Harry Styles knows how to make you feel right at home. Harry’s House , his third and best album, gives a welcoming pop vibe. Harry’s House is a place where he invites you in, sits you down in the kitchen, cooks you pancakes and hash browns, opens a bottle of wine, serves bubblegum and edibles, then whisks you out to the garden to listen to your whole life story. It’s an idyllic place to spend an hour. But the centerpiece of the album is “Matilda,” a real heartbreaker, an acoustic-guitar ballad about someone learning how to build a new life after a traumatic past. It’s a new peak for Harry—one of the most emotionally powerful songs he’s ever done. He wrote “Matilda” with Amy Allen (who also cowrote “Adore You”) along with his trusty collaborators Tyler Johnson and Kid Harpoon. It comes halfway through the album, surrounded by glam-pop gloss—a deep breath of a song. He listens to Matilda tell this painful story, responding, “ You don’t have to be sorry for leaving … [Read more...] about ‘You Can Let It Go’: Why Harry Styles’ ‘Matilda’ Is His Heartbreak Masterpiece

Cannes Review: Paul Mescal In Charlotte Wells’ ‘Aftersun’
Scottish writer-director Charlotte Wells lights up Cannes Critics’ Week with Aftersun , the absorbing story of an 11-year-old going on holiday with her father. Paul Mescal ( Normal People, The Lost Daughter ) stars alongside Francesca Corio in a terrific two-hander with engaging supporting performances. Shot on location in Turkey, the film is partly a comedy-drama about a package holiday, but also a meditation on memories of a father with mental health problems. The young Sophie (Corio) is clearly happy to be spending time with her dad. Mescal is playing slightly older than his 26 years, but it’s still suggested that he had a child too young. People assume they’re brother and sister; he doesn’t want to hang out with other parents because they’re too old. Separated from Sophie’s mother, he does his best to show his daughter a good time, but there are limits to the local attractions for this slightly odd couple. There’s swimming in the pool, mocktails in a shisha café and one … [Read more...] about Cannes Review: Paul Mescal In Charlotte Wells’ ‘Aftersun’
How Ethan Coen’s Documentary on Jerry Lee Lewis Brought Him Back to Filmmaking
Ethan Coen wasn’t exactly a scholar on Jerry Lee Lewis . You wouldn’t even have called him a fan, really. Sure, the Oscar-winning filmmaker — who, along with his brother Joel, has given the world The Big Lebowski and Barton Fink and Fargo and No Country for Old Men and a dozen other movies that have earned rabid cults and regularly show up on Greatest Movies Ever lists — knew “Whole Lotta Shaking Going On.” Everybody does. He could probably sing a few verses of “Great Balls of Fire” in a karaoke emergency if need be. Press him, and Coen might name you some of his other early hits, like “High School Confidential,” “Breathless,” or “High Heel Sneakers.” And like most folks, he knew about Lewis marrying his 13-year-old cousin and the scandal that ensued, derailing the Killer’s early career and stopping his chart-topping reign dead in his tracks. Coen had also, by his own admission, “left the movie business” and wasn’t necessarily looking to throw himself into another … [Read more...] about How Ethan Coen’s Documentary on Jerry Lee Lewis Brought Him Back to Filmmaking
‘Un Día Normal’ Turns 20: Juanes Remembers
Twenty years ago today, Juanes released his breakthrough album, Un Día Normal. Juanes had previously released Fíjate Bien, his debut LP, which had success locally in Colombia . However, with its mix of catchy pop, cutting rock, and traditional Latin sounds, Un Día Normal took him to an entirely new level. It spent 92 weeks on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart, setting a record at the time, and it spun off gigantic back-to-back hits such as “A Dios Le Pido,” “Mala Gente,” and “Es Por Ti,” all songs that helped define pop-rock in Spanish for that era. The album won six Latin Grammy, including Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year — and it made Juanes a star. Below, he remembers putting together the album during a hectic, emotional time, filled with highs and lows that inspired the sound of the record. He talks about the changes he was going through at the time, how he drew from his past, and how Un Día Normal changed the game for him and Latin … [Read more...] about ‘Un Día Normal’ Turns 20: Juanes Remembers

Nancy Pelosi Banned from Receiving Communion in S.F. Over Abortion
TMZ/Getty Composite Nancy Pelosi won't be receiving the body of Christ anytime soon -- at least not her in hometown -- as one of the holy shot-callers there says it's a no-go ... all over abortion. Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone -- who's a major decision-maker for all things Roman Catholic in and around San Francisco -- threw down the hammer on the House Speaker this week ... saying she's banned from receiving Communion anywhere in town, on his orders. After numerous attempts to speak with Speaker Pelosi to help her understand the grave evil she is perpetrating, the scandal she is causing, an the danger to her own soul she is risking, I have determined that she is not to be admitted to Holy Communion. https://t.co/l7M85CyG86 — Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone (@ArchCordileone) May 20, 2022 @ArchCordileone His rationale ...
