For all intents and purposes, Sunday’s Golden Globes ceremony was an imitation of life; stars dressed up for “red carpet” pictures from homes and hotel suites around the world, before logging onto a Zoom meeting to hear the results. Even the show’s hosts were in different cities, interacting awkwardly around broadcast delays. But after a barrage of negative attention on the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in the days leading up to the show, it was the imitation of sincerity in addressing the criticism that rankled most. “The truth is everybody did the best they could,” Said New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Monday. “The truth is it was the middle of a terrible pandemic. The truth is, Covid attacks older people. The truth is, with all we know, people still die.” Cuomo was responding to a cascade of reports over the past few days that his administration had withheld information about the scope of devastation wrought by Covid-19 in the state’s nursing homes. On Friday, The New York Times reported that a top Cuomo aide revealed in a private conference call with Democratic donors that NY withheld data because it feared an investigation by then-President Trump’s Justice Department. Early in the pandemic, Cuomo was lauded for his seeming straightforward presentation of the facts of the pandemic in the state. Eddie Van Halen , the self-taught guitarist for Van Halen who influenced generations of players with his legendary licks, died today of cancer. He was 65 and had battled health problems and substance abuse for years.
