‘Illegal Abduction’: Portland Protester Sues Feds For Snatching Her Off the Street
A protester who was snatched off the street by camouflaged government agents and shoved into an unmarked minivan during the federal crackdown on Black Lives Matter demonstrations in Portland has filed a lawsuit claiming her core constitutional rights were violated. In mid-July 2020, Evelyn Bassi got swept up in one of the darkest episodes of the Trump administration when she was grabbed by armed federal agents, detained in a van against her will, and frisked before ultimately being let go. Her new lawsuit claims that her “illegal abduction” was feature of a “terror campaign against Portlanders” orchestrated by then-President Trump, intended to “intimidate the public and chill free speech.” She is seeking compensatory and punitive damages. In the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd in late May 2020, Portland transformed into a hotbed of nightly protests. Black Lives Matter demonstrations against police violence were countered, ironically, by wave after wave of … [Read more...] about ‘Illegal Abduction’: Portland Protester Sues Feds For Snatching Her Off the Street

Davos World Economic Forum Back In Person; No Snow Or Stars As Politicians, CEOs Hold Court North Of Cannes
YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki and Microsoft chief Satya Nadella were skedded to join 2,500 politicians, business and nonprofit leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos , Switzerland this week as the annual gathering kneecapped by Covid is back in person. It reconvenes, a bit subdued, at a critical moment with the world staggering under food scarcity, raging fuel prices and war. There’s usually a sprinkling of snow on the pines at the toney mountain resort, about a seven-hour drive from the Cannes Film Festival. The showbiz presence is also scant at an event that over the years has hosted Hollywood and music royalty like Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie, Charlize Theron, Sharon Stone, Goldie Hawn, Bono, Peter Gabriel and Will.I.Am. Davos is the place where assembled dignitaries tittered and booed a boastful speech by former President Donald Trump in 2018, but weren’t laughing when he returned in 2020. In 2021, the event was virtual. This year, it … [Read more...] about Davos World Economic Forum Back In Person; No Snow Or Stars As Politicians, CEOs Hold Court North Of Cannes
Man Arrested for Threatening to Blow Up Tyler Perry Studios
The house Tyler Perry built was almost blown to smithereens -- at least that's what could've happened if this guy got his way ... so say cops. The media mogul was at the center of a scary bomb threat from a man named Coles Arrasheed ... according to Atlanta PD which arrested him for making terroristic threats against Tyler's Georgia studio. In the report, obtained by TMZ, cops say Coles dialed in to the studio's main number back on May 13, and demanded to speak to TP himself -- but the receptionist told him it was impossible, which apparently pissed off this guy to the point he started talking gibberish. Naturally, the receptionist was freaked out, hung up and even blocked his number. But, according to the report, she discovered he left a voicemail in which he allegedly threatened to blow the place to high heaven. That's what prompted her to call the police. They eventually tracked down Coles, and he was brought in on a felony charge at Fulton … [Read more...] about Man Arrested for Threatening to Blow Up Tyler Perry Studios
The Art World’s ‘Mini Madoff’ Faces Sentencing for His $86 Million Fraud
Before Inigo Philbrick became known as the art world’s “ mini-Madoff ,” he cultivated a reputation as a wunderkind gallerist. A bon vivant with boyish good looks and even better connections, Philbrick opened two of his own art galleries by his early 30s. Philbrick had enjoyed the backing of a top gallerist and the trust of seasoned collectors. He boasted a comely girlfriend and had ingratiated himself with her family. Philbrick, as it would turn out, was a scammer. He pleaded guilty on Nov. 18, 2021 to one count of wire fraud. At the time, the then 34-year-old Philbrick admitted in court that between 2016 and 2019, he “knowingly engaged” in a scheme to rake in cash using “material representations and omissions” in his business deals, including shady tactics like peddling more shares in an artwork than actually existed. He will be sentenced Monday afternoon for the $86 million fraud. Papers submitted in advance of his sentencing paint a comprehensive, and complicated, … [Read more...] about The Art World’s ‘Mini Madoff’ Faces Sentencing for His $86 Million Fraud

Los Angeles Mayor’s Race: ICM Partners, Politico To Host Candidates Forum On Homelessness
Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA) and Councilman Kevin de Leon will take part in a Los Angeles mayoral candidates forum at ICM Partners on Tuesday that will focus on what is perhaps the biggest issue in the race: homelessness. The event, called Solving Homelessness and sponsored by Politico and ICM Partners , also will feature Alfre Woodard with opening remarks. She also talked of a plan to house 15,000 people in her first year.
