The Film Academy And Its Oscars Manage To Feed On Their Own Mistakes

January 26, 2023 by deadline.com

Well, the mostly predictable Oscar nominations arrived Tuesday morning with no disasters or truly egregious missteps. Even the snubs were fairly routine: no female directors, though women won the directing award in the past two years ; James Cameron and Joseph Kosinski, both with Best Picture nominees , were left out too. Such normalcy is too bad. And I mean that in the nicest possible way. It’s a weird but undeniable fact of Hollywood life that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and its pet awards ceremony feed on their own mistakes. Let things go well or follow an expected path, and the Oscars turn into a yawn. But screw something up, and suddenly it’s the Greatest Show on Earth all over again — back on the pedestal, just waiting to be knocked off by the howling crowd. Errors are an asset. Gaffes are gold. The Academy is never so interesting as when it is just, plain, obviously wrong. This is not a casual mechanism. By and large, average … [Read more...] about The Film Academy And Its Oscars Manage To Feed On Their Own Mistakes

‘Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania‘ Hits Tracking With $120M Projected U.S. Debut: It’s All About Kang

January 26, 2023 by deadline.com

Disney / Marvel Studios ’ Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania arrived on tracking today with a projected 4-day $120M opening per industry sources. The threequel arrives in theaters on Feb. 17 and is the first in an avalanche of largely weekly tentpole fare which has been absent from the marketplace since the summer. That result for Quantumania will land among the top three openings for the Presidents Day weekend after Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther in 2018 ($242.1M) and Deadpool ($152.1M). Why so big? It all boils down to Marvel’s new baddie Kang the Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majors, taking a more pronounced leading role in the movies here after first being introduced in the Disney+/Marvel Loki series. Kang’s terrifying talent: Being able to replicate himself into different variants and wage wars across the multiverse. Following Loki fans have been waiting for Kang to create more waves. The anticipated U.S./Canada start for the Peyton Reed directed … [Read more...] about ‘Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania‘ Hits Tracking With $120M Projected U.S. Debut: It’s All About Kang

tWitch’s Friends Slam Todrick Hall for Speculation About DJ’s Suicide

January 27, 2023 by www.tmz.com

TMZ/Getty Friends of the late Stephen "tWitch" Boss are calling out his "pal" Todrick Hall ... after he suggested the pressure around Ellen DeGeneres ' workplace scandal might have been a factor in tWitch's suicide. For those unaware, Todrick made the implication this week while promoting a new reality show he's doing ... telling Page Six he believed the public calling on the DJ to stop supporting Ellen took too big of a toll. Referring to tWitch opting to take his life, Todrick added, "I don’t know what was going on in his life that may [have led] him to make that decision but I do understand." Gallery Launch Gallery Getty A source close to tWitch tells TMZ ... it's extremely negligent and self-serving of Todrick to assume he knows what led to tWitch's death. The source also found it unfortunate he would speculate, especially while promoting his own project. We're told tWitch loved his time on "Ellen," and had a ton of respect … [Read more...] about tWitch’s Friends Slam Todrick Hall for Speculation About DJ’s Suicide
