The Inspection , Elegance Bratton ’s narrative feature debut, will close out the 60th New York Film Festival with its U.S. premiere Oct. 14. Based on Bratton’s experience as a gay man in Marine Corps basic training after a decade living on the streets, the portrait of American masculinity and the military during the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell era stars Gabrielle Union and Tony and Emmy-nominated Jeremy Pope in his first lead film role. Filmmaker and photographer Bratton previously lensed documentary Pier Kids , about homeless queer and transgender youth in New York, and the Viceland series My House , on underground competitive ballroom dancing. The Inspection , an A24 film, follows Pope’s Ellis French through an emotional and physical gauntlet in his intimidation by a sadistic sergeant (Bokeem Woodbine), his desire for a sympathetic superior (Raúl Castillo), and his complicated feelings toward a mother who rejected him (Union). “I’m incredibly humbled that my … [Read more...] about New York Film Festival Sets Elegance Bratton’s ‘The Inspection’ With Jeremy Pope, Gabrielle Union As Closing Night Film

Emmy-Nominated ‘The Andy Warhol Diaries’ Paints New Portrait Of The Artist As Gay Man: “In The Diaries His Lust Is Very Palpable”
In the mid-1970s Andy Warhol began keeping a diary–of sorts. It started out as a dry accounting of expenses–a tube of paint here, a quart of milk there—dictated to his collaborator Pat Hackett. But over time the entries shifted from the strictly mundane to something deeper and more personal. “I’ve got these desperate feelings,” he noted in a 1981 entry, for instance, “that nothing means anything.” Andy Warhol’s diaries were published posthumously in 1989, Hackett having edited the raw 20,000 pages to a more manageable, if not inconsiderable, 807. But it was not until this year that The Andy Warhol Diaries were transformed into a documentary series for Netflix , and an acclaimed one at that. It has earned four Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series and individual recognition for Andrew Rossi for writing and directing the series. “The diaries when they were published were seen as scandalous because of all of the gossip,” Rossi … [Read more...] about Emmy-Nominated ‘The Andy Warhol Diaries’ Paints New Portrait Of The Artist As Gay Man: “In The Diaries His Lust Is Very Palpable”
Remy to Rumble: Fetty Wap and His Crew Conquer America
Fetty Wap, all of 24 years old, uploaded a song to SoundCloud in April of 2014 and it just, well, stuck around. “Trap Queen” — currently in its 34th week on the Hot 100 — continues to define pop ubiquity, blasting from car speakers in the middle of the day, getting requests at the club that night. The rapper, born Willie Maxwell, is at the Pepsi Center in Denver — far from his home in Paterson, New Jersey. He’s opening for Chris Brown near the tail end of a month-long, countrywide jaunt, but that’s just the tip of his celebrity: Kanye West was an early Fetty Wap supporter; Drake contributed a verse to the remix for his third hit, “My Way”; Taylor Swift covered “Trap Queen” with the rapper in Seattle. However, when Fetty Wap dropped the track list to his self-titled debut album — due out September 25th — A-list names were conspicuously absent. “I didn’t have no features on ‘Trap Queen.’ It was just me,” says Fetty on his tour bus in the shadow of the venue. He’s having his braids … [Read more...] about Remy to Rumble: Fetty Wap and His Crew Conquer America
The Band’s Essential Albums
When Eric Clapton first heard the Band , he knew he was done with Cream. “I’m in the wrong place with the wrong people doing the wrong thing,” the guitarist later recalled thinking, and he wasn’t the only one left stunned by the group’s laid-back revolution. Synthesizing R&B, country, blues and early rock with chops seasoned by years on the road with Ronnie Hawkins and Bob Dylan , Canadians Robbie Robertson , Richard Manuel, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson , along with their Arkansas-born drummer-singer Levon Helm — once collectively known as the Hawks, and, later on, the Crackers — made everything old-timey, rural and ramshackle seem profoundly cool. For the next eight years, they would craft some of rock’s earthiest, grooviest and most yearning sounds. Here’s our comprehensive guide to their legacy on record, from Big Pink to The Basement Tapes and beyond. Must Have Music From Big Pink (1968) “We were rebelling against the rebellion,” Robbie … [Read more...] about The Band’s Essential Albums
NASCAR Nixes ‘Let’s Go Brandon’ Crypto Coin Sponsorship of ‘Let’s Go Brandon’ Driver
UPDATE (1/5): NASCAR has rejected a planned sponsorship between Brandon Brown and LGBCoin, The Washington Post reports. Brown and his team, Brandonbilt Motorsports, publicized the partnership at the end of December, but the sponsorship was reportedly approved by a NASCAR employee who wasn’t authorized to do so. It wasn’t until Tuesday, Jan. 4, that NASCAR executives officially reviewed the sponsorship, ruled against it, and informed Brandonbilt Motorsports. A NASCAR official also claimed that during a November discussion about the potential sponsorship between NASCAR and Brown’s team, the governing body told Brandonbilt it wouldn’t allow any references to the anti-Biden “Let’s Go Brandon” chant. Reps for Brandonbilt Motorsports and NASCAR did not immediately return requests for comment. ** Racecar driver Brandon Brown, who played an inadvertent role in the creation of the anti-Joe Biden chant, “Let’s Go Brandon,” has picked up the most appropriate possible sponsor for … [Read more...] about NASCAR Nixes ‘Let’s Go Brandon’ Crypto Coin Sponsorship of ‘Let’s Go Brandon’ Driver
Olivia Newton-John Battles Back
A story idea from our London correspondent, circa 1975: Olivia Newton-John . You are going to have to face this subject sooner or later. But this is a story that definitely should not be question-and-answer style, since Olivia in person is quite boring. She has virtually nothing to say. One of my friends took her out once, and even then she had nothing to say. Olivia could understand. “I feel it must be strange for you interviewing me,” she said between shows at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas, “because I must be so alien to the paper. When I found out I was doing the interview, I thought, ‘Why the hell would. They want to talk to me ?’ I’m so out of everything the magazine seems to represent.” Lee Kramer, Olivia’s manager and longtime lover, had okayed the interview, but not before making a request that Rolling Stone be gentle with her. “She’s keen to sit down with any members of the press,” he said in our first telephone conversation. “But sometimes they come to take … [Read more...] about Olivia Newton-John Battles Back
Bert Fields Talks Disney Ban, George Lucas, James Cameron, Harvey Weinstein, Napoleon & The Next Big Thing
EXCLUSIVE: It might not be too much of a stretch to say that Bert Fields has played a role in almost every great Hollywood legal battle of the last 30 years. The Cardinal Richelieu of Tinseltown attorneys, Fields counts among his accomplishments successfully taking on Disney and Michael Eisner to the tune of a $250 million payout for Jeffrey Katzenberg back in the late 1990s. He repped Star Wars creator George Lucas in negotiations with the House of Mouse as well. The Greenberg Glusker Fields Claman & Machtinger partner has also represented Tom Cruise, the Weinsteins, James Cameron , Warren Beatty against Paramount over Reds , the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Godfather author Mario Puzo and his estate and other heavyweights, including studios like Universal. Snared for a time in the FBI’s spotlight over his hiring of Anthony Pellicano , Fields eventually emerged unscathed from the scandal — a fate not shared by many who employed the still-imprisoned P.I. … [Read more...] about Bert Fields Talks Disney Ban, George Lucas, James Cameron, Harvey Weinstein, Napoleon & The Next Big Thing

FBI Raids Mar-A-Lago As It Executes Search Warrant, Donald Trump Says
The FBI raided Mar-A-Lago as it executed a search warrant on the property on Monday, Donald Trump said. It is unclear exactly why the FBI obtained the search warrant, but The New York Times reported that it was related to an investigation of boxes of classified material that were brought to Mar-A-Lago after Trump’s presidency ended, rather than turned over the National Archives. The raid also comes as the Justice Department has been investigating Trump’s conduct related to January 6th, The Washington Post reported last month. The news of the search warrant on a former president, believed to be unprecedented, quickly dominated coverage on cable news. Typically, for a judge to sign off on a search warrant, there has to be probable cause that a crime was committed, senior legal analyst Elie Honig said on CNN. The network reported that the agents arrived on Monday morning and remained there for several hours. Trump said in a statement, “These are dark times for our … [Read more...] about FBI Raids Mar-A-Lago As It Executes Search Warrant, Donald Trump Says
