They derived a large portion of their income from designing web pages. Formed in the Seventies, they had become reclusive by the start of the 1990s and started attempting to recruit members online using the organizational name “Higher Source” for the website . Though the web would eventually become central in the organization, the … [Read more...] about Heaven’s Gate 20 Years Later: 10 Things You Didn’t Know

Why Golden State Warriors Aren’t Really the NBA’s Bad Guys
It feels like the beginning of something big. Analysts and fans have been talking about it since the Fourth of July, feeling some feelings about it, like it’s something we’ll be looking at for years to come. On Thursday, October 13th, in advance of the Los Angeles Clippers playing the Portland Trail Blazers in a preseason match-up, Paul “The Truth” Pierce – 2008 NBA Finals MVP, en route to the hall of fame, playing his final season with the Clippers this year – laid down some law about what he sees as the “new generation.” “I understand when you have great players on losing teams who are tired of losing, struggling in the playoffs every year – you’re the lone star,” he said on a league-sponsored Sirius XM show. “I’ve been in that position. I could have left Boston years ago, but I stuck it out. I just feel like when you’re that close, as a competitor, you don’t go join the team that just put you out.” When he said he understood, he was referring to his experience carrying the … [Read more...] about Why Golden State Warriors Aren’t Really the NBA’s Bad Guys
‘Mr. Malcolm’s List’ Has Subdued $1M Weekend Amid Franchise Fever – Specialty Box Office
Moviegoing is definitely back with viewers flocking to franchise films that 1) continue to roll out in the first sustained barrage of big new titles since Covid, and 2) continue to do huge business as they stick around in theaters. The widest specialty indie opening this week, Bleecker Street’s Mr. Malcom’s List , will gross $851,854 through Sunday and an estimated $1.03 million for the four-day weekend on 1,384 screens — an estimated PSA of $745. The well-reviewed, period romp with a strong, diverse cast a la Bridgerton and the same Jane Austen-esqe antecedents is classic counterprogramming but there is a lot to counter. From Minions: The Rise of Gru at no. 1 with a massive opening weekend; to Top Gun: Maverick at no. 2 and holding strong in week six, plus Elvis, Jurassic World Dominion and Lightyear. Thor: Love and … [Read more...] about ‘Mr. Malcolm’s List’ Has Subdued $1M Weekend Amid Franchise Fever – Specialty Box Office

Dissidents Vow To Take Actors Equity To Court Over Fate Of Small Theatre In LA
The gloves have come off in the ongoing battle that will decide the fate of small theatre in Los Angeles. A day after Actors’ Equity announced that attempts to resolve the dispute had failed, a group of actors and local theatre owners said tonight that they will go ahead and serve the lawsuit they filed against the union last October to stop it from forcing small legit theaters in Los Angeles to pay their actors minimum wage. Under the current rules, many small theatre actors work for as little as $7 a day. The plaintiffs, including actors Ed Harris, Amy Madigan and former SAG president Ed Asner, claim that scrapping the union’s 99-seat theatre waiver, which has been in place since 1989, will force many of the city’s small theatres to close. “We will serve the lawsuit and defend vigorously against Equity’s efforts to have the case dismissed,” the dissident actors and theatre owners said in a statement issued minutes ago. “We will ask the NLRB to enjoin Equity from putting its new … [Read more...] about Dissidents Vow To Take Actors Equity To Court Over Fate Of Small Theatre In LA
