The weekend’s Snowmageddon on the East Coast likely had a depressing influence on the box office, though some holdovers still managed to overcome the blizzard with solid numbers even as they expanded. Sony Classics’ The Lady In The Van , Sundance Selects’ 45 Years and Paramount’s Anomalisa held their own in additional theaters this weekend, even as the industry turned its eyes to Park City to catch the core of the year’s next crop of Specialty offerings awaiting acquisition. Oscar nominees Brooklyn, Room and Spotlight continued to lure audiences with added locations, while the weekend’s reporting newcomers had mostly soft starts, though Ip Man 3 showed zest. Well Go USA opened Hong Kong title Ip Man 3 in over a hundred locations Friday, easily grossing the weekend’s best numbers among the newcomers. The feature grossed $762,400, averaging $7,402. The distributor noted that grosses were up 20% Friday to Saturday despite losing key theaters due to the … [Read more...] about Specialty Box Office – Newcomers Mostly Slow In The Snow; ’45 Years’ & ‘Lady In The Van’ Solid

Supreme Court Strikes Down New York’s Limits on Carrying Concealed Weapons in Public
The Supreme Court on Thursday struck down a provision of New York state’s concealed-carry licensing system, ruling that the state’s laws imposing limits on who could carry concealed weapons in public was unconstitutional. New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen centers around a 1913 New York law outlining the requirements for carrying a concealed gun in public. In order to be granted a license, someone must either prove that there is a specific “proper cause,” or else have a job that makes them a target, like a judge. The Supreme Court ruled the law is unconstitutional 6-3, along ideological lines. Conservative Justice Clarence Thomas wrote the majority opinion, arguing that this requirement of the law “violates the Fourteenth Amendment by preventing law-abiding citizens with ordinary self-defense needs from exercising their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms in public for self-defense.” Justice Samuel Alito in a concurring opinion implied that … [Read more...] about Supreme Court Strikes Down New York’s Limits on Carrying Concealed Weapons in Public
Phoebe Bridgers Issues New Statement Addressing Ryan Adams Allegations
Phoebe Bridgers , one of seven women who came forward with allegations of emotional abuse and sexual misconduct against Ryan Adams in a New York Times report , has issued a new statement addressing the situation. “It’s been a weird week and I wanted to say a couple things. Thank you from my whole fucking heart to my friends, my bands, my mom,” Bridgers wrote in the caption of a photo of her and her Boygenius band mates. “They all supported and validated me. They told me that what had happened was fucked up and wrong, and that I was right to feel weird about it. I couldn’t have done this without them.” “Ryan had a network too,” Bridgers continued. “Friends, bands, people he worked with. None of them held him accountable. They told him, by what they said or by what they didn’t, that what he was doing was okay. They validated him. He couldn’t have done this without them.” As Bridgers discussed in the Times report, after she and Adams embarked on what she called a … [Read more...] about Phoebe Bridgers Issues New Statement Addressing Ryan Adams Allegations
TV On The Radio Unleash New Songs At Maximum Volume in Portland
The question going into Friday night’s TV on the Radio tour opener in Portland, OR was how the band would translate the orchestral heights of Dear Science, their upcoming second album for Interscope, to the stage. Earlier records also incorporated strings and horns, but they were chopped and filtered, collage-like and abstract. Much of Dear Science, is built on string-section melodies more coherent and conventionally beautiful than the fuzz-rock ambiance the New York City quintet is known for. The answer, apparent immediately: with volume. If lead singer Tunde Adebimpe and guitarist/vocalist Kyp Malone were the band’s very visible headlights, its overshadowed and over-revved engine were guitarist Dave Sitek and rhythm section Gerard Smith and Jaleel Bunton. Adebimpe — arms circling in a loose-limbed traffic cop dance, singing into one standard mike and a second wired with effects — traded doo-woppish harmonies with Malone; the pair sang scat as often as lyrics. Surrounded by … [Read more...] about TV On The Radio Unleash New Songs At Maximum Volume in Portland
Lena Dunham’s ‘Sharp Stick’: See Red Band Trailer for New Film About Womanhood, Sexuality
Lena Dunham will return after a 12-year feature filmmaking hiatus with the semi-autobiographical, sex-filled and trauma-talking Sharp Stick , with the writer-director-star sharing the movie’s new red band trailer Thursday ahead of its summer release. The movie trailer opens with protagonist Sarah Jo (played by Kristine Froseth) searching up porn for the first time, gearing audiences up for a story that navigates youth, sexuality, and womanhood. Dunham’s uncanny wit is apparent in the trailer’s glimpse into Jo’s life: The music mellows as Jo’s mother heartedly teaches her the name of a penis that is wider than it is long; we’ll let you figure that one out for yourself. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone , Dunham noted the potential backlash the movie may face from the leads’ difference of age and and sexual-experience: Josh (played by Jon Bernthal is married and Sarah Jo is a twentysomething virgin. She explained a certain ‘movie magic’ that allows audiences to … [Read more...] about Lena Dunham’s ‘Sharp Stick’: See Red Band Trailer for New Film About Womanhood, Sexuality

Ambar Lucid Draws From the Tarot Deck for Gauzy New Song ‘La Torre’
Ambar Lucid has always made dreamy pop music with depth, and her upbeat new single “La Torre” is an ode to growing up and embracing necessary change. The song, primarily in Spanish, was also inspired by the Tower, a tarot card associated with destruction and liberation, and it helps tell the story of how Lucid has been transforming into her confident new alter ego Estrella—which is also the name of her upcoming album and current headlining tour. The singer-songwriter shared the track with a visualizer filmed and edited by her past collaborator Clyde Munroe. In a statement, Lucid revealed that “La Torre” was one of the hardest songs she’s ever written. “‘La Torre’ was inspired by my chaotic childhood and becoming conscious of how cycles from the past manifest into the present,” she said, adding, “For me, ‘La Torre’ was the song I needed to write, the things I needed to process and come to terms with, so that I could then become Estrella.” “La Torre” follows “girl ur so pretty” and … [Read more...] about Ambar Lucid Draws From the Tarot Deck for Gauzy New Song ‘La Torre’
Santigold Embraces Her Greatness on New Song ‘High Priestess’
Santigold has returned with a jittery blast of future punk, “High Priestess,” which marks her first solo release in four years. “High Priestess” is pure energy with its blend of restless percussion and new wave synths (a video short for the song was also released). Santigold largely crafted the track with the Berlin-based producer/DJ Boys Noize, though she brought in a handful of other collaborators — including Ray Brady, Psymun, and Ryan Olson — to help her fine-tune the exact sound she wanted. “The energy I was looking for couldn’t be the old version of punk rock, it had to be the future sound of punk rock,” Santigold said of the song in a statement, adding: “It all came together in a way I could never have imagined when we started, but it was exactly what I set out to make. I want to make music that sounds like the past and the future all in one; music that makes you feel safe enough to jump in, but then takes us on a journey to where we needed to go but have never even heard … [Read more...] about Santigold Embraces Her Greatness on New Song ‘High Priestess’
