Tom Sherak Q&A: Cancer Battle And $1 Salary Not Stopping New L.A. Film Czar’s Latest Quest
As my colleague Dominic Patten was first to report earlier today on Deadline, former Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak has been named to the new post of LA Film Czar by Mayor Eric Garcetti. Sherak will be paid only $1 a year (“an infinity compared to what the Academy paid,” he laughed about his previous nonpaying gig) in the post designed to bring a halt to runaway production and put it back in Los Angeles, capital of the film world. Of course Sherak is no stranger to politics, of a sort: Being a former President of the Motion Picture Academy is no walk in the park. He knows the real “capital” is Sacramento, where he will spend time trying to convince Gov. Jerry Brown and lawmakers this is an important issue — not only for Los Angeles but California as a whole. In a conversation that turned very personal this afternoon, Sherak told me he initially resisted the job but took it only after a meeting with Garcetti this week and an OK from his … [Read more...] about Tom Sherak Q&A: Cancer Battle And $1 Salary Not Stopping New L.A. Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg Pleads Guilty In New York Tax Case
Allen Weisselberg , the longtime chief financial officer for the Trump Organization , pleaded guilty on Thursday to 15 charges related to tax fraud and evasion. Weisselberg’s plea requires that he testify against the Trump Organization, as opposed to Donald Trump himself, at an upcoming trial. Weisselberg faces a five month jail sentence on Rikers Island and five years probation, and paying nearly $2 million in taxes, penalty and interest. Last year, New York prosecutors charged Weisselberg and the Trump Organization in an alleged scheme to evade taxes on more than $1.7 million in income. Weisselberg initially pleaded not guilty to the charges. Prosecutors had described a 15-year tax scheme and said the charges include 15 felony counts, including a scheme to defraud, conspiracy, grand larceny and falsifying business records. They said they have digital drives with grand jury testimony, bookkeeping records, tax records, statements of potential witnesses. HBO Max Offers Discounts Of Up To 42% To New And Existing Subscribers
Against the eventful corporate backdrop of Warner Bros Discovery trimming expenses and trying to convince Wall Street of its strategy, the company is offering limited-term discounts on streaming service HBO Max for both new and existing subscribers. Anyone signing up for a full-year plan by October 30 will pay $104.99 for the ad-free tier and $69.99 for the ad-supported one, a 30% savings compared with the going rates of $149.99 and $99.99. Compared with month-to-month pricing, which always runs higher than the year-at-a-time rate, the savings reach 42%. The deal is only for the first year and must be ordered through the HBO Max website or via distribution partners Roku, Google Play, Apple, and Amazon. The lower prices are timed with the long-awaited rollout of Game of Thrones spinoff series House of the Dragon , which debuts this week. PILOT LOCATIONS: Los Angeles Makes Drama Rebound, New York Gains In Comedy, New Orleans Hot
Following several years of declines in the number of drama pilots shot in Los Angeles, the City of Angels staged a comeback this season with 14, reclaiming the top spot as the most popular drama pilot destination after falling for the first time to No. 3 last year behind New York and Vancouver. Los Angeles benefited from the increased overall pilot volume this season, housing 13 of this year’s 48 hourlong pilots, up from 8 (out of 41) last year and 11 (out of 42) the year before, and just short of the 2010 haul of 14 pilots (out of 43). New York, fresh off luring back The Tonight Show , has become a comedy pilot magnet. The Big Apple already has solid comedy credentials on the cable side with FX’s Louie and HBO’s Girls , but I can’t think of any major half-hour broadcast pilot shot in New York since NBC’s 30 Rock , which just ended its seven-season run. This year, there were a whopping five (all single-camera): NBC’s Michael J. Fox project, which has straight-to-series … [Read more...] about PILOT LOCATIONS: Los Angeles Makes Drama Rebound, New York Gains In Comedy, New Orleans Hot
Maryland Gov. Set To Sign New Film-TV Tax Credit Bill Into Law Next Week
Film and TV production in Maryland just got a big boost — a $17.5 million boost to be specific. Earlier this week, the state’s House of Delegates passed a bill increasing Maryland’s film tax credit program from its current $7.5 million for the fiscal year 2014 to $25 million. It now heads to Gov. Martin O’Malley to sign. The Democratic Governor was a big supporter of the bill and, according to a spokesperson from his office, “could sign the bill as early as Tuesday.” Intended to bring out-of-state production to Maryland, the bill also extends the state’s program for another two years until June 30, 2016; the current tax credit program was set to expire on July 1 this year. The legislation benefits productions that spend at least $500,000 in Maryland. In recent years, the state has been a destination for political-themed productions, with Netflix’s House Of Cards and HBO’s Veep shooting there. Game Change, the Emmy-winning HBO movie about the 2008 Presidential … [Read more...] about Maryland Gov. Set To Sign New Film-TV Tax Credit Bill Into Law Next Week
New York Sees Rise In Film And TV Productions & Jobs: MPAA
New York State has seen a dramatic rise in recent years in film and television production and jobs, says a report released today by the MPAA. Employment in the industry in the state grew by 25% between 2008 and 2011, according to the study ( read it here ) conducted by HR&A Advisors for the MPAA. The approximately 46,100 jobs and 135 productions in New York in 2011 are a direct result of the state’s tax credit, says MPAA chairman and CEO Chris Dodd — a clear comparison to the sagging situation in Los Angeles County and California. “These findings further confirm that the New York State production incentives have grown into a major economic driver in the state’s economy,” said Dodd. That’s translating into this year, too: As of mid-November 2012, film and TV spending in New York State is at $1.9 billion, more than previous high of $1.83 billion from 2008 and with six weeks left in the year. TV series Law & Order SVU, Blue Bloods and Elementary are among those that film … [Read more...] about New York Sees Rise In Film And TV Productions & Jobs: MPAA
