‘The Night Agent’: How Thriller Almost Didn’t End Up At Netflix & Underwent Story Tweaks Before Becoming Streamer’s Next Big Hit
Netflix yesterday gave The Night Agent a quick Season 2 pickup only six days after the action-thriller from creator Shawn Ryan and Sony Pictures TV launched with the third-best premiere week of viewing for a new series — only behind Wednesday and Dahmer — putting the series starring Gabriel Basso on track to potentially land in the Top 5 of Netflix’s all-time most popular series. “I’m still getting my head around it,” Ryan, creator of The Shield and showrunner of S.W.A.T. , said. “I’ve had a long career and certainly some success stories, but nothing quite like this in terms of intense, immediate fan reaction. Almost doesn’t feel real.” The renewal comes exactly two years after The Night Agent , inspired by Matthew Quirk’s novel, was pitched to the streamer, which initially was not very impressed. A few things from that original pitch changed before the series reached the air, mainly, taking out the Secret Service storyline from the pilot script and delaying … [Read more...] about ‘The Night Agent’: How Thriller Almost Didn’t End Up At Netflix & Underwent Story Tweaks Before Becoming Streamer’s Next Big Hit
‘The Residence’: Barrett Foa Joins Netflix’s Shondaland Drama As Recurring
EXCLUSIVE: NCIS: Los Angeles alum Barrett Foa has been tapped for a recurring role opposite Uzo Aduba in Netflix ’s Shondaland murder-mystery drama The Residence , from writer Paul William Davies. Using Kate Andersen Brower’s book The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House as a jumping off point, the eight-episode series is described as “a screwball whodunnit set in the upstairs, downstairs, and back stairs of the White House, among the eclectic staff of the world’s most famous mansion.” Its premise: 132 rooms. 157 suspects. ‘The Mandalorian’ Zooms Onto Nielsen U.S. Streaming Charts During Season 3 Premiere Week; ‘Outer Banks’ Continues Reign
The Mandalorian shot back onto Nielsen ’s U.S. streaming charts during the week of the Season 3 premiere. The Disney+ series tallied 823M viewing minutes from February 27 to March 5, coming in at No. 5 among streaming programs. According to Nielsen, the first episode from Season 3 generated 57% of that total, despite only being 42 minutes long. The Star Wars spinoff series is no stranger to the Nielsen streaming Top 10, having previously made history as both the first Disney+ show to make the list and the first non-Netflix show to hit No. 1 . The debut week for Season 2 saw over a billion viewing minutes across nine episodes, so while Season 3’s number is still impressive, it is a dip from the previous installment. There are currently five episodes of Season 3 streaming on Disney+, so it is possible the show will climb higher in subsequent weeks. It was quite the week for Pedro Pascal, who stars in The Mandalorian as well as HBO’s The Last Of Us , which held … [Read more...] about ‘The Mandalorian’ Zooms Onto Nielsen U.S. Streaming Charts During Season 3 Premiere Week; ‘Outer Banks’ Continues Reign
Showtime Releases Development Following Regime & Programming Strategy Change
EXCLUSIVE: The ongoing changes at Showtime have reached the network’s development slate which has been cut down significantly, with a slew of projects getting a pass, I hear. There had been a programming slate reevaluation since Chris McCarthy added Showtime to his purview following the exit of longtime CEO David Nevins in October. The process accelerated last month when, following the January announcement that the premium cable network will be integrated into Paramount+ on digital and renamed as Paramount+ with Showtime on linear, it was revealed that Showtime will merge with MTV Entertainment Studios. McCarthy at the time set new programming leadership for the network, with Nina L. Diaz expanding her role as Chief Creative Officer and President of Content of the combined operation, and Keith Cox named President of Scripted, reporting to her. The release of a ton of development that had been bought by the previous regime a month later comes and as Showtime is shifting its … [Read more...] about Showtime Releases Development Following Regime & Programming Strategy Change
