Angel Olsen: No One Sings Quite Like Candi Staton

· March 3, 2021 ·

For this year’s annual Women Shaping the Future issue, we asked 12 of today’s top musical acts to talk about the women who have inspired them most in their lives and careers. Here, Angel Olsen shares why she’s always telling people to listen to more of R&B/disco/roots veteran Candi Staton ‘s music. I moved to Chicago from St. Louis in my early twenties. The winters were really tough, and I’d have to get up at 5 a.m. to go open the cafe where I worked. Candi’s music was something I would turn to every day on my way to work. Now, when I listen to her music, I always think about Chicago. It was the first time in my life that I was really introduced to different kinds of music, and Candi was a big slice of that. I had moved in with this guy who became my long-term boyfriend, and he introduced me to jazz and soul. I remember being really drawn to her music. A lot of people try to get me into other singers, but there’s something about her vocals — maybe it’s just that I can … [Read more...] about Angel Olsen: No One Sings Quite Like Candi Staton

The Who’s Pete Townshend on Raiding Vaults for ‘My Generation’ Box Set

· November 16, 2016 ·

In the past couple of years, the Who have found themselves between generations. They’ve been playing songs from throughout their 50-year career on the road, but the audiences, by Pete Townshend‘s estimation, have been skewing younger and younger. “When we started this tour, we were pleased that maybe 20 percent of our audience was under 30,” he tells Rolling Stone. “And the numbers have just increased. It just means we’re playing music to a new audience. Sometimes they’re familiar with it but mostly, if they’re familiar with it, they’re certainly not jaded by it. They’re not bored with it. They’re not looking for something new from it. They’re just taking it at face value and fitting it into the modern world in whichever way is pertinent, and that is fantastic to me as a performer but also fantastic to me as a writer.” This surge of interest from millennials has come at a surprising time for the group, which … [Read more...] about The Who’s Pete Townshend on Raiding Vaults for ‘My Generation’ Box Set

Tapestry

· April 29, 1971 ·

Carole King ’s second album, Tapestry, has fulfilled the promise of her first and confirmed the fact that she is one of the most creative figures in all of pop music. It is an album of surpassing personal-intimacy and musical accomplishment and a work infused with a sense of artistic purpose. It is also easy to listen to and easy to enjoy. Miss King’s past accomplishments have become something of a pop music legend. She and her former husband and lyricist, Gerry Goffin, were one of the three great independent pop song-writing teams of the Sixties, the other two being Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. It is as much to their credit that they not only wrote one of Aretha Franklin ‘s best songs, “Natural Woman,” but Steve Lawrence and Edyie Gorme’s best, “Go Away Little Girl,” as well. They wrote the Animals’ best pop record, “Don’t Bring Me Down,” and Bobby Vee’s best seller, “Take Good Care of My Baby.” Then there was “Chains” and “Don’t Say Nothing … [Read more...] about Tapestry
