Local 700, the Motion Picture Editors Guild, has published a "Contract Talk" page on its website, detailing the reasons why its board voted unanimously on Saturday to recommend to its members to vote "no" on the proposed IATSE contract. IATSE, the union that represents most unionized film and TV crew members, and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers on Thursday reached a tentative deal on a new three-year contract. Now the pact requires ratification to go into effect. Cathy Repola, national executive director of the Editors Guild, has described the contract as "a totally, unnecessarily unacceptable agreement" in a memo to members. But IATSE international president Matthew D. Loeb called the agreement a "huge victory," saying that it “will bring significant gains and continued security for the welfare and livelihood of all IATSE members covered by the Basic Agreement." Emmys: Nominees to Watch in the Creative Arts Categories
This year's Creative Arts Emmy nominees include some notable names and familiar faces, including some Emmy vets and Oscar winners. Here are some of the names to watch. Production designer Eugene Lee, who was born in 1939 and has been with SNL since it debuted in 1975, earned his 14th Emmy nomination for the series. He has two previous wins. Several Academy Award winners or nominees are also in contention for Emmys. Oscar-winning composer Mychael Danna (Life of Pi) is a double Emmy nominee for Alias Grace, for which he is nominated alongside his brother and frequent collaborator, Jeff Danna (music composition for a limited series, movie or special), and for The Last Tycoon (main title theme music). Craig Mann, an Oscar winner for Damien Chazelle's Whiplash, is Emmy-nominated for sound mixing for miniseries Waco, alongside fellow rerecording mixer Laura Wiest and production mixer David Brownlow. ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ Sound Editor Joins Sony Pictures Post Production
Supervising sound editor, sound designer and re-recording mixer Will Files--who earned a Motion Picture Sound Editors Golden Reel Award earlier this year for War for the Planet of the Apes--has joined Sony Pictures Post Production Services. Files' string of credits includes Passengers, Deadpool, Star Trek: Into Darkness and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. He's currently working on Columbia's Venom, which is slated to open Oct. 5. “Will is a brilliant sound artist with an impressive resume and an uncanny ability to enhance stories through sound,” says Sony Pictures Post Production executive vp Tom McCarthy in a released statement. “It’s great to be welcoming him to Sony Pictures at a time of real momentum for our sound team.” At Sony, Files will work in a new pre-dub mixing stage and sound design studio on the Sony Pictures lot in Culver City. George Watters II to Receive Motion Picture Sound Editors’ Career Achievement Award
January 08, 2012 11:21pm PT by Gregg Kilday The Motion Picture Sounds Editors have chosen supervising sound editor George Watters II as its 2012 MPSE Career Achievement Recipient. He will receive the honor at the 59th annual Golden Reel Awards to be held Feb. 19 at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles. Watters, who has received eight Oscar nominations, won Academy Awards for his work on 1990's The Hunt for Red October and 2001's Pearl Harbor. He's also earned four MPSE awards and three BAFTA nominations. "The significance of sound should not be underestimated," MPSE president Bobbi Banks said. "The emotional intimacy of the sound experience is enhanced by giving the audience the perception that they are encountering the same state of cognitive consciousness as the characters." “We Cut Countless Versions of this Scene”: Editors Bing Liu and Joshua Altman on
Joshua Altman cut his first Sundance-bound documentary in 2009 with We Live in Public. The film – Altman’s first as an editor of documentary features – went on to win the Grand Jury Prize for documentary at the festival. Since then, Altman has cut five more docs to premiere at Sundance: The Tillman Story (2010), Bones Brigade: an Autobiography (2012), We Are The Giant (2014) and, in 2018 alone, both Kailash and Minding The Gap. The latter film he cut with film’s director, Bing Liu. Liu himself appears in the film among a trio of friends who bond over skateboarding in their Rust Belt town.
