How BTS Are Breaking K-Pop’s Biggest Taboos
In modern South Korea, pop stars and politics don’t often mix. While some hip-hop acts (such as Epik High) address controversial topics, many idol groups stick to a slick, apolitical formula with a proven record of success. BTS, who just became the first K-pop act ever to top the Billboard 200 album sales chart, have become a record-setting success story in part because of their willingness to buck this convention. The seven young men who make up the group have been speaking their minds since their debut, openly discussing LGBTQ rights, mental health and the pressure to succeed – all taboo subjects in South Korea. Their stance is particularly bold given the Korean government’s history of keeping an eye on controversial themes in pop music. By straddling the line between maintaining a respectable image and writing critical lyrics, BTS have offered a refreshing change from what some critics and fans dislike about the K-Pop machine. The group’s history of open-mindedness … [Read more...] about How BTS Are Breaking K-Pop’s Biggest Taboos
Tiffany Young Steps Into the Solo Spotlight
Stephanie Hwang was 15 when she left her native California for Seoul, South Korea, where she hoped to become a music star. Within two years, the teenager – now going by the stage name of Tiffany – made her debut with Girls’ Generation, which would become one of the most successful K-Pop groups ever. “It wasn’t easy in the beginning, because I was in Korea without my family and I couldn’t speak the language,” says the 28-year-old singer. “I had to learn Korean really fast so that I knew what was going on.” Last year, she opted not to renew her contract with SM Entertainment and moved back to Los Angeles to study acting and launch her solo career. Her first post-Girls’ Generation single is “Over My Skin,” a sensual, bold, English-language song she co-wrote, and is releasing under the new stage name Tiffany Young. Young spoke with RS about her new solo confidence, why she’d like to duet with Sam Smith, and more. Was your decision to use the name Tiffany Young – which … [Read more...] about Tiffany Young Steps Into the Solo Spotlight
Conan Gray Has Many Many Feelings — And Manages Them Quite Impressively on ‘Superache’
Calling an album Superache is about as subtle as slapping a “Feelings Ahead” sign on its cover, but Conan Gray reached the vanguard of twentysomething pop by always putting his emotions right up front. On his second album, the 23-year-old YouTuber turned pop star reveals himself to be an astute observer of the human condition, recounting everyday scenes and highlighting those split-second details in interactions that can make a warm rapport between two people transform into permafrost. Gray has a lithe voice that simultaneously possesses the intensity of Shawn Mendes and the sweetness of Carly Rae Jepsen, a potent combination that adds both anguish and romanticism to his music. Some of the most gripping songs on Superache find Gray almost dispassionately describing his own life’s ups and downs before lowering the boom. On the longing “Footnote,” Gray recounts moments when he and someone he’s close to were mistaken for a couple, his observations (“They think we’re a … [Read more...] about Conan Gray Has Many Many Feelings — And Manages Them Quite Impressively on ‘Superache’

Maren Morris on Abortion Ruling: ‘Tomorrow I Will Fight, But Today I Am Grieving’
In light of the Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling Friday morning overturning Roe v. Wade and allowing states to restrict or ban abortion at any point during a pregnancy, a handful of country music artists have spoken out in opposition to the decision. Chief among them is Maren Morris , who detailed her own journey to becoming a mother in an exclusive statement to Rolling Stone . Morris, 32, says she waited until she was 29 and financially stable to try to have a child with her husband, fellow songwriter Ryan Hurd. The “Circles Around This Town” singer planned out details ranging from where her son would be born to what school he would one day attend. “Every choice, every decision, a thoughtful one,” Morris says. “Today, I hold my two year old son with tears streaming down my face because all my love and planning still wasn’t enough to protect him from being born in a country who could do this to women. Women, the ones who gave each Supreme Court Justice on the bench the … [Read more...] about Maren Morris on Abortion Ruling: ‘Tomorrow I Will Fight, But Today I Am Grieving’
The Supreme Court’s Liberal Justices Deliver Stark Warning: Overturning Roe is Just the Beginning
The three liberal justices who opposed Friday’s decision eliminating a constitutional right to an abortion did not hold back, writing a blistering dissent likening the “catastrophic” decision to a “loaded weapon” that “takes aim… at the rule of law.” Justices Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan, writing together, abandon legalese for plain language starkly laying out the consequences of the majority’s reactionary decision. “It eliminates a 50-year-old constitutional right that safeguards women’s freedom and equal station,” they write, adding that it also “places in jeopardy other rights, from contraception to same-sex intimacy and marriage,” and crucially “undermines the Court’s legitimacy.” The dissent attacks the majority opinion on substantive, moral, historical, logical and legal grounds, warning that the institution has grown brazenly political with Donald Trump’s additions to the bench: “The Court reverses course [on Roe ] today for one reason and one … [Read more...] about The Supreme Court’s Liberal Justices Deliver Stark Warning: Overturning Roe is Just the Beginning
