Devin Halbal has a distinct memory of her first experience with “doll activities.” It was three Powerpuff Girls toys — the intuitive Blossom; Buttercup, known for her tough exterior; and the optimistic Bubbles. She was in preschool, and wanted to bring the dolls in for show and tell. But her mom refused, so Habal brought in a photo of her cat instead. “That was the first moment where I knew something was wrong with me playing with dolls,” Halbal tells Rolling Stone . “It was just, like, a matter of not letting other people know that I played with dolls.” But times have changed. Halbal, 23, now displays the qualities of each of her favorite Powerpuff dolls — and being a trans woman who grew up in New York City, it’s helpful to have all three. And today, she’s turned what she calls “doll activities” into a way of life. Known to her fans as Hal Baddie, Halbal has been creating content as a travel influencer on TikTok since June 2021, growing her following (which is now over … [Read more...] about As a Child, Hal Baddie’s ‘Doll Activities’ Were Hidden. How an NHL Enforcer Broke His Body — and Turned to Psychedelics to Heal His Brain
Riley Cote ’s journey to enlightenment began in earnest when a hulking man punched him in the face. Cote, now 40 and retired from professional hockey, remembers the moment with a dark laugh. He’d gotten into this particular bust-up one night during the 2009 season with one of the NHL ’s most vicious fighters, and took the worst of it, waking the next day with his left eye blackened shut. “What,” he asked himself, “am I doing?” He drove to the Philadelphia Flyers training facility and got into the shower. Feeling congested, he reached for a tissue. He didn’t realize he’d suffered a cracked sinus, so what happened next was physics. When he blew his nose, the air — rather than coming out of his nostrils — inflated his face. The pressure surged instantly behind his good eye and closed it tight. Team trainer Derek Settlemyre heard Cote scream. “His whole face had swollen up,” Settlemyre recalls. “We tell them, if they think they have a fracture, ‘Don’t blow your nose’ — and he … [Read more...] about How an NHL Enforcer Broke His Body — and Turned to Psychedelics to Heal His Brain
Interview: Winona Ryder
W inona Ryder thinks reading me her diaries is a dreadful idea. I beg her in the name of science, medicine and anything else I can think of. We talk it over. And over. I tell her she would be giving a gift to the readers — something pure, unfiltered, straight from the mountain spring. She tells me that hauling out those spiral notebooks would be “the cheesiest, tackiest thing in the world.” Still, she mulls it over. For weeks, she says neither yes nor no. Instead, I get the message you occasionally get from those old Magic 8 Balls: Reply Hazy, Try Again . On New Year’s Day, Ryder calls from her place in New York, and this time the Magic 8 Ball says, incredibly, Signs Point To Yes . The 22-year-old actress lives in a gorgeous, stately apartment building in Manhattan — an ocean liner drifting through a gray and dingy neighborhood. Tonight, Ryder’s friend Kevin Haley and her boyfriend, Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum, are downstairs cooking dinner. The actress is in her bedroom, … [Read more...] about Interview: Winona Ryder

Max Verstappen Says Nelson Piquet Isn’t Racist, Hamilton Comment Was ‘Not Correct’
Getty Max Verstappen is breaking his silence on Nelson Piquet 's controversial comments about Lewis Hamilton ... saying the 3-time champion was wrong to use the language he did, but insisting his girlfriend's father is not a racist. "Everyone is against racism, I think it's very straight," Max told reporters ahead of this weekend's British Grand Prix. "I think the wording that was used, even though, of course, we have different kind of cultures and things that were said when they were younger, is not correct." Getty As we previously reported, Piquet was discussing an accident between Hamilton and Verstappen at the 2021 British Grand Prix in an interview with Motorsports Talk ... when, according to a translation by CNN Brazil, he referred to Hamilton as a "little n*****." Piquet has since apologized ... but adamantly denied any racial intent behind his comment, saying it was a term used in Brazilian Portuguese to mean "guy" or … [Read more...] about Max Verstappen Says Nelson Piquet Isn’t Racist, Hamilton Comment Was ‘Not Correct’
Nipsey Hussle’s Accused Murderer Mounts Short Defense After Graphic Autopsy Photos
The man who admittedly gunned down beloved rapper Nipsey Hussle in a caught-on-video attack three years ago rested his strikingly short defense in less than three hours at his first-degree murder trial Wednesday — a day after he allegedly was jumped and beaten unconscious by fellow inmates in county jail. Eric Holder Jr. sat at the defense table with an obviously swollen left eye and three staples in his head as prosecutors showed harrowing autopsy photos before resting their case by 10:30 a.m. and handing the reins to Holder’s public defender, Aaron Jansen. Nothing was said to the jury about Holder’s obvious injuries before the evidence and testimony phase of the two-week trial ended by mid-afternoon. As Rolling Stone first reported Tuesday, Holder was attacked by two inmates who purportedly, according to his lawyer, pummeled him and cut his head with a razor. Jansen elaborated on the jail attack Wednesday, telling reporters during a break outside the courtroom that the … [Read more...] about Nipsey Hussle’s Accused Murderer Mounts Short Defense After Graphic Autopsy Photos
Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith Answers Your Twitter Questions
Although Red Hot Chili Peppers member Chad Smith and his doppelgänger Will Ferrell may have spent much of 2014 trying to prove how different they are from one another, with their hilarious competition on The Tonight Show , the drummer does have something in common with the actor: he’s very funny. As Rolling Stone read the drummer the questions fans sent in via Twitter, he cracked wise about everything from the Chili Peppers’ penchant for wearing socks on their private parts to how Ferrell “robbed” him of the Golden Cowbell during his drum-off with the actor this year. Over the past quarter century, Smith has played with the Chili Peppers, the supergroup Chickenfoot and various sessions with the likes of Kid Rock, the Dixie Chicks and Johnny Cash. And, with an eye toward helping other musicians, he has also spent time lobbying for music education in Washington, D.C. – including a recent trip to the White House – and building a drum community with his Chad Smith Drum … [Read more...] about Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith Answers Your Twitter Questions
‘It Doesn’t Feel Dark to Me’: PJ Harvey on Her Surreal New Novel, Growing Older, and the Beauty of Ugliness
In Orlam, the surrealistic new novel written in poetic verse by alt-rock firebrand Polly Jean Harvey, a nine-year-old girl named Ira-Abel, in England’s Dorset region, swoons over ghosts and encounters real-life villains, all as foretold by her village’s oracle, Orlam, the eviscerated eye of Ira’s pet lamb. Harvey, who was once a nine-year-old Dorset girl herself, wrote the entire work in the region’s dialect — rendering words like “grievance” as “engripement” and “hot” as “hetful” — which makes the whole story even more delightfully strange. (She also included a standard-English translation of the book, which comes out in the U.S. on Aug. 1 .) Although she previously published another book of poetry, The Hollow of the Hand , in 2015, Harvey has since honed her skills under the mentorship of Scottish poet Don Paterson for a period of three years, during which she developed many of the ideas in Orlam . “Learning the craft of poetry writing seemed to be a very natural … [Read more...] about ‘It Doesn’t Feel Dark to Me’: PJ Harvey on Her Surreal New Novel, Growing Older, and the Beauty of Ugliness
