From executive producers Daniel Barnz , Zelda Barnz and Ben Barnz, Generation is the new kid on the HBO Max block. The new series may deal with the authentic lives of the modern teenager, from social media to sexuality and gender identity, but Generation is no Euphoria , said star Justice Smith . “These are all very different stories,” he said during HBO Max’s leg of the CTAM press tour on Wednesday. “We’re in a new zeitgeist now where we’re accurately depicting adolescence what life is like.” Inspired by Zelda’s high school experiences, Generation is a dark yet playful show that follows a group of high school students whose exploration of modern sexuality tests deeply entrenched beliefs about life, love and the nature of family in their conservative community. Like Smith, Daniel Barnz said that Generation differs from the Sam Levinson-created series in a number of ways, including it’s format. In the first part of the interview he spoke of his guitar smashing techniques, why he does it, the mod revolution in England and narrated the story of his next record, an opera titled Deaf, Dumb and Blind Boy. The interview was conducted by Jann Wenner one night after the Who’s recent appearance at the Fillmore West. The subject again returns to rock and roll in general, as the questions and answers meander in and out from his personal life to his public life. It always gets back to the main theme: what is it? “It concerns far more than 20-year-olds. It’s lasted too long,” says Townshend, “it concerns everybody now.” You talked about maturing and settling down. How has this affected you?It gives me a far more logical time aspect on the group. I’m not as frantically working as I used to. I always used to work with the thought in … [Read more...] about Pete Townshend Settles Down
The Who’s Pete Townshend on Raiding Vaults for ‘My Generation’ Box Set
In the past couple of years, the Who have found themselves between generations. They’ve been playing songs from throughout their 50-year career on the road, but the audiences, by Pete Townshend‘s estimation, have been skewing younger and younger. “When we started this tour, we were pleased that maybe 20 percent of our audience was under 30,” he tells Rolling Stone. “And the numbers have just increased. It just means we’re playing music to a new audience. Sometimes they’re familiar with it but mostly, if they’re familiar with it, they’re certainly not jaded by it. They’re not bored with it. They’re not looking for something new from it. They’re just taking it at face value and fitting it into the modern world in whichever way is pertinent, and that is fantastic to me as a performer but also fantastic to me as a writer.” This surge of interest from millennials has come at a surprising time for the group, which … [Read more...] about The Who’s Pete Townshend on Raiding Vaults for ‘My Generation’ Box Set
