“Our people are scattered, like stars in the galaxy,” booms Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin about his Mandalorian kin in the season 3 trailer for Disney+’s The Mandalorian . “What are we? What do we stand for?” he continues. The bounty hunter is attempting to reunite his people on their tragic home planet of Mandalore. Tragic in that the Mandalorian people were once massacred in the Night of a Thousand Tears by the Empire; the surviving Mandalorian scattered throughout the galaxy. As Din says, he’s heading back there “to be forgiven or his transgressions” Also seen in the trailer, a group of jedis are wielding their sabers (in Star Wars extended David Filoni lore, they’re foes of the Mandalorians). Also, it seems as though Baby Yoda aka Grogu is significantly stronger with the force as he throws a huge creature. Also getting a cameo is a Kowakian monkey-lizard laughing in tree. Perhaps it’s Salacious Crumb from Jabba the Hutt’s palace, maybe? Or did he go down with the barge in … [Read more...] about ‘Mandalorian’ Season 3 Heads To Mandalore; Rachel Morrison, Peter Ramsey & Lee Isaac Chung Among Episodic Directors – Trailer

Sundance Review: Sing J. Lee’s ‘The Accidental Getaway Driver’
The Accidental Getaway Driver is one those rare, where-did-this-come-from films that every so often pops up to invigorate festivals and adventurous viewers on the lookout for something fresh and different. Generically, this is nothing new, a low-down gritty crime drama populated by cars, guns and desperate characters. But the movie, which premiered in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival, benefits considerably from being set in the rarely, if ever, filmed Little Saigon section of Orange County south of Los Angeles; a highly unlikely cast dominated by an octogenarian not looking for trouble; and, crucially, a noirish nocturnal milieu that injects the action with dread, even with a final stretch doesn’t really pay off with the kind of tension you expect from a crime drama. However, despite its lack of an exciting climax, this is a film that draws you in and offers sufficient satisfactions to attract genre aficionados and others keen to partake of some good new … [Read more...] about Sundance Review: Sing J. Yvette Lee Bowser points to Unprisoned — Onyx’s first scripted comedy that stars Kerry Washington and Delroy Lindo — as a key example of how far TV has come when it comes to telling contemporary Black stories. “We are absolutely making progress,” said Bowser, whose numerous credits include A Different World, Living Single, black-ish and now serving as showrunner on Unprisoned . “I’ve been in the business 35 years. It’s beginning to change. It’s incredibly cathartic and incredibly rewarding to be here to shepherd such a beautiful, fresh story … we as Black writers have been fighting to tell a story. Now we find ourselves in a period of time that we can go deeper, much deeper, why we struggle to love.” Inspired by the life of author Tracy McMillan, Unprisoned is a half-hour about “a messy but perfectionist relationship therapist and single mom whose life is turned right-side-up when her dad gets out of prison and moves in with her and her teenage son.” … [Read more...] about ‘Unprisoned’ Showrunner Yvette Lee Bowser Says TV “Absolutely Making Progress” With Black Stories
