January 22, 2023 by deadline.com

Miss France Eva Colas’ introduction at the recent Miss Universe made her a global viral star, with viewers calling her screeching “France” shoutout anything from satanic to rooster-like. The moment was immortalized on Saturday Night Live , with host Aubrey Plaza as Miss France. ‘Saint Omer’ Director Alice Diop On Why It’s Important For Her Films To Make A Political Statement – The Deadline Q&A

January 13, 2023 by deadline.com

Alice Diop ’s French drama Saint Omer opens in theaters today, and I remember the emotions I felt when I saw the film at Venice last year. It was a very personal experience for me — as if someone was telling my story on screen. At the beginning of my eventual interview with Diop, I asked where she sees herself within the French film industry. She made it clear she has stopped contemplating how she fits in. “It’s a question that I’m asked a lot, but I no longer ask myself where I fit in with French cinema,” she said. Can’t blame her for thinking that way. Creators of color often are asked those questions — or about the state of inclusion in Hollywood and how they would improve it. Questions that their white counterparts frequently and unfairly avoid. Written by Diop, Amrita David, and Marie N’Diaye, Saint Omer allowed the director to shift focus to her work and let the story speak for itself. “I don’t want to put my energy into what my place in the industry is anymore,” … [Read more...] about ‘Saint Omer’ Director Alice Diop On Why It’s Important For Her Films To Make A Political Statement – The Deadline Q&A

January 13, 2023 by deadline.com

Tosin Cole was larking about on the set of the Warner Bros House Party reboot in Los Angeles when an email dropped from casting director Kim Coleman ( BlacKkKlansman ) about Emmett Till ’s story. “I was like, ‘I’m filming for months non stop, I want to go home,’ ” he recalls thinking. “They wanted me to go for Medgar Evers , and I was like, ‘I don’t know who that is. Let me think about it.’ “ His agent brought him up short telling him, “No, you got to do it. At least send a tape.” “I was like, ‘I’m doing night shifts in LA. I don’t know when I’ll have time,’ ” he worried. That’s when Barbara Broccoli, an executive producer of UAR’s Till , zinged him a message saying, “We’d love to have you on board, if you can.” That missive sharpened Cole’s mind.
