Beach-dwelling backstabbers beware: Ned Schneebly and Johnny Mundo are about to hit Survivor. Multi-hyphenate filmmaker Mike White (School of Rock, Chuck & Buck) and seasoned professional wrestler John Hennigan (known variously as "John Morrison," "Johnny Nitro," "Johnny Mundo," and "The Mayor of Slamtown") are among the 20 castaways set to compete on the 37th season of the CBS reality franchise, called Survivor: David vs Goliath. In the season, players will be divided into two tribes based on the biblical match-up: the "Davids," who are viewed in the eyes of the Survivor gods as perpetual underdogs, and the "Goliaths," viewed as titans of their industries and masters over their ways of life. "David vs Goliath is another risky idea," says Jeff Probst, executive producer and host. "Two tribes that at first glance appear very uneven. One tribe has always had advantage, and the other has only had obstacles. But Survivor is the great equalizer. And what we hope for in David vs Goliath … [Read more...] about ‘Survivor’: Filmmaker Mike White, Wrestler John Hennigan to Compete on Season 37
Mike White’s father-and-son college-trip comedy-drama Brad’s Status is legitimately more frightening than anything in It. Quite aside from the fact that real life is always scarier than monsters from the beyond, the writer-director’s deep understanding of envy, entitlement and embarrassment has never been more nightmarishly effective. But don’t expect one of those broad humiliation comedies where the audience cringes and laughs as the characters make increasingly bigger asses of themselves; those movies usually provide some sort of catharsis. Brad’s Status remains grounded in reality — it’s gentle, human and unresolved. I loved it, but I don’t think I’ll ever be able to watch it again. “I felt like the world was rubbing my nose in something,” observes Brad (Ben Stiller), a reasonably well-off owner of his own nonprofit company, early in the film. He’s married to a beautiful and happy wife (Jenna Fischer), with a … [Read more...] about Mike White’s Brad’s Status Makes a Comic Horror Show of Disappointment

On Wednesday, White House senior aide Rob Porter announced his resignation after both of his ex-wives went public with claims of physical and emotional abuse. So just who is this West Wing staffer? And why is the White House defending him so vigorously in the face of some truly horrific allegations? Porter’s official title was White House staff secretary and assistant to the president for policy coordination. But multiple reports peg Porter as having been a crucial gatekeeper, particularly as soon as John Kelly took over as chief of staff. Politico reported, in August, about a pair of memos authored by Kelly and Porter spelling out precisely how information in the White House was to be filtered. Porter had a crucial role in deciding what reached President Donald Trump‘s desk. A Business Insider profile of Porter quoted an unnamed Senate aide describing how Porter fit in to the Trump administration — of which he has been part since the beginning. “He’s … [Read more...] about Who is Rob Porter — The Senior White House Aide Who Resigned Amid Domestic Violence Allegations?
