Kroger, which owns the Harris Teeter brand and is buying most of the 21 Farm Fresh stores to be sold across Hampton Roads, says it's hiring 420 people across six states in its mid-Atlantic division, including Virginia, at https://jobs.kroger.com.More than 1,300 employees work in Farm Fresh's 17 remaining stores that haven't been sold yet. Farm Fresh's owner, Supervalu, hasn't put a deadline on its exit from the market but has warned workers that they could be laid off as of May 14.Farm Fresh store manager Andy Adams, who has organized his own job fair to benefit the grocer's workers, says he has about 100 employers signed up for the April 18 event happening from 2-6 p.m. at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. NORFOLKA freshwater mussel that's found in the nation's mid-Atlantic region will soon be listed as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act.The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said the listing will take effect in May for the yellow lance mussel. The species can be found in Maryland's Patuxent River, North Carolina's Neuse River and Virginia's James River, among others.The agency attributed poor water quality to the mussel's decline. Specifically, too much sediment, pesticides and municipal waste flowed into waterways where the mussels live.U.S. Fish and Wildlife said partnerships with state agencies and others have been established to improve conditions for the mussel.Its name comes from its two bright yellow hinged and elongated shells.
