Shawn Windsor Detroit Free Press Published 11:00 AM EST Jan 1, 2019 SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Free Press sports columnist Shawn Windsor answers three questions after Michigan State football's 7-6 loss to Oregon in the Redbox Bowl on Monday: Where does Brian Lewerke go from here? The Spartans' quarterback took a step back this season. He'll be the first to tell you that. The injury to his shoulder didn't help. And cost him a chance to figure himself out. But even before he got hurt he wasn't playing at the same level he did a year ago. His pocket presence was different, and he often couldn't decide when to stay in it and make a throw or when to bolt and try to pick up yards on the run. Against Oregon, he looked hesitant at times, but he ran more forcefully and generally appeared more relaxed. He's got to improve his accuracy on the run. And if MSU wants to make a push in the Big Ten East next season, he'll have to build on what he did as sophomore, and put his junior … [Read more...] about Michigan State QB Brian Lewerke must put ’18 season in trash

Chris Solari Detroit Free Press Published 1:07 PM EST Nov 6, 2018 EAST LANSING — Brian Lewerke or Rocky Lombardi? There is no “OR” for No. 24 Michigan State at starting quarterback Saturday against No. 8 Ohio State. At least not on the Spartans’ depth chart. And at least not from what coach Mark Dantonio is saying publicly. Lewerke re-assumed the on-paper title of starting quarterback, with Lombardi back to a backup role after being listed as co-starter before Saturday’s game at Maryland. Dantonio continued to back the junior as the quarterback to lead the Spartans against the Buckeyes (noon, Fox) this week. “Brian is our starting quarterback,” Dantonio said Tuesday during his weekly news conference. “I think you can go with that because of the foundation he has built here. I didn’t see any velocity issues relative to his arm strength. … “If he was hurt, he would not be playing. Is he 100 percent? Nobody is … [Read more...] about Michigan State QB situation clear: Brian Lewerke the starter
Chris Solari Detroit Free Press Published 3:12 PM EDT Nov 1, 2018 EAST LANSING – The design was to go on 2. Rocky Lombardi reminded every one of Michigan State’s offensive players all week, and again before he went under center, that’s what he wanted. And they listened to him. One problem: He forgot himself. “I just went in there and laughed and go, ‘Guys, I’m an idiot, I’m sorry,’” he chuckled Tuesday. “And don’t worry, the Purdue D-linemen were already calling me an idiot before that. It was pretty funny, and the guys were like, ‘Come on.’ “But it won’t happen again.” Whether Lombardi gets to go on to a second start Saturday at Maryland (noon, ESPN2) remains to be seen. Junior Brian Lewerke, who was not made available to the media this week, continues to mend from a right shoulder injury he suffered at Penn State on Oct. 13 and kept him out of last week’s 23-13 win over … [Read more...] about Michigan State QB question lingers: Lombardi or Lewerke?
Chris Solari Detroit Free Press Published 6:01 AM EDT Oct 3, 2018 EAST LANSING — Brian Lewerke looked to his right. Then he looked to his left. That’s where Andre Welch stood, wide open, near the left sideline. Lewerke eyed him briefly, then turned his head back the other way and fired toward Felton Davis III in the end zone. Central Michigan’s Sean Bunting stepped in front of the pass. Another interception added to Lewerke’s growing turnover total. But like the four interceptions before that, there remains room for debate whether the junior quarterback is to blame or whether he is a victim of circumstances. After Saturday’s 31-20 win over the Chippewas, Lewerke initially said he felt the CMU defensive back interfered with Davis. His opinion changed after rewatching the play. But Lewerke still felt it was the right call to throw to Davis on the slant rather than to Welch in the flat. Sean Merriman Special to Detroit Free Press Published 9:03 p.m. UTC Jul 27, 2018 Time to open up the recruiting mailbag: "Who will be the QB in the 2019 class for MSU?" — Tenn Sparty Put it this way: If the Spartans don't get a commitment from Austin (Texas) St. Michael's Academy 3-star QB Sam Saxton within the next month, I would be very surprised. After Oak Park QB Dwan Mathis recently flipped his commitment from MSU to Ohio State, quarterback became a need for the Spartans in the 2019 class, and all signs right now point to Saxton being the guy. He is expected to visit MSU at the end of this month, and an offer could come during that visit if the MSU coaching staff like what they see. Saxton has also gone on record saying that he would like to have his recruitment finalized by the time his senior season starts, so a commitment could come soon if indeed an offer is extended. "What's the story with Stephen Herron?" — Scott Seslar Nothing new to report. The former … [Read more...] about Recruiting mailbag: Michigan State QB, Michigan DL situations for 2019
