Details of King Charles III ’s coronation in May were revealed Saturday by Buckingham Palace . Three days of celebrations are planned, including a concert featuring “global music icons and contemporary stars,” none of whom were named. The concert will take place on Sunday, May 7 at Windsor Castle ’s East Lawn on the day after the coronation, the latter a solemn religious affair. The music show will be part of celebrations across the UK, part of the so-called “Coronation Big Lunch.” The concert attendees will be drawn from an audience composed of volunteers from the King and Queen Consort’s charity affiliations and those public members selected through a national ballot held by the BBC. While specific performers were not noted, the Palace said the program will consist of a “world-class orchestra playing interpretations of musical favorites fronted by some of the world’s biggest entertainers, alongside performers from the world of dance…and a selection of spoken … [Read more...] about King Charles Coronation To Be A Three-Day Event, Punctuated By Major Artist Concert

Sundance Review: Susanna Fogel’s ‘Cat Person’ Starring Emilia Jones & Nicholas Braun
Based on one of the most sensational and much-discussed short stories of recent times, which was heralded as the most-read story ever to appear in The New Yorker, Cat Person is a disarmingly creepy film with a disturbing edge that will surely trigger further discussion about contemporary dating and romantic protocols. Years ago, a little film like this would have found a modest but loyal following among young audiences. Now, however, its forthright presentation of the pitfalls of flashing yellow lights where male-female relations are concerned should make this a must-see and a subject of hot discussion at least among teens and young adults. The film’s modest scale and non-big-star cast present a significant plus going in, as more famous names would have tilted the scale in a misleading direction concerning audience expectations. Michelle Ashford , the creator and main writer for the long-running Masters of Sex TV series, and The Flight Attendant director Susanna … [Read more...] about Sundance Review: Susanna Fogel’s ‘Cat Person’ Starring Emilia Jones & Nicholas Braun
Oscar Diversity: Asian & AAPI Representation Turn Up Big In Nominations
Asian and Asian American Pacific Islander representation prevailed at this year’s Oscar nominations, fueled largely by A24’s indie event, Everything Everywhere All at Once with 11 noms . The breakthrough comes in the wake of Parasite ‘s 6 Oscar noms/4 wins in 2020, and Minari ‘s six Oscar noms/one win. Malaysian-born Michelle Yeoh made history as the first Best Actress Asian nominee for Everything Everywhere All at Once . Yeoh played Evelyn Wang in the film, an immigrant laundromat owner, who together with her husband Waymond Wang (Ke Huy Quan) battles across the multiverse for the soul of their daughter, Joy Wang ( Stephanie Hsu ). Diversity in the the Best Actress category has been slim throughout AMPAS history with Halle Berry the only winner. While hardly a dozen Black women were nominated for Best Actress, there have been just four Latina/Hispanic. This morning also saw the first actress of Cuban descent, Ana de Armas, making waves in the category for … [Read more...] about Oscar Diversity: Asian & AAPI Representation Turn Up Big In Nominations
Eleven Oscar Noms For ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once:’ It All Started With Admiration For A Dead, Flatulating Harry Potter
Everything Everywhere All At Once announced itself this morning as a serious Oscar threat with 11 nominations , topping off with Best Picture. That includes performing noms for Michelle Yeoh , Jamie Lee Curtis, Stephanie Hsu and Ke Huy Quan . The film also drew noms for Original Screenplay, Costume, Original Score, Original Song, Film Editing and Directing for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. The overachieving journey of the film is almost as absurd as its parallel universe storyline. It goes far beyond being the rare film to premiere at the SXSW festival and find its way to Oscar almost a year later. The film began with AGBO partners Joe and Anthony Russo seeing Kwan & Scheinert’s Swiss Army Man , the film that starred Paul Dano as a man stranded on a desert island who befriends a dead body — played with flatulent gusto by Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe — as they join forces to return to civilization. The AGBO partners gave a blind deal to “The Daniels,” as the … [Read more...] about Eleven Oscar Noms For ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once:’ It All Started With Admiration For A Dead, Flatulating Harry Potter
